Hello again lads! After a bit of a participation lack last week, this week I've chosen a more general theme that people should like; "Melee that map". For this week's exercise, I want you guys to create a melee map! Of course, you can fill it in in your own way - if you don't have the time/patience to do a full map, just do a starting location and perhaps a natural. The only requirement for the exercise is that the (part of the) melee map you create is reasonably balanced (as in: it could be played on if it were a full map) and pretty looking.
For those interested in learning something, I hope this might help you learn to be both creative and scarce with doodads, as well as placing them in the right spot when balance is an issue. Good luck regardless, wonder what you guys will throw up! :)
Heyhey! This one interested me a little bit more. Maybe that's just random feeling, but what ever. I made a map in about 3-4 hours. That picture is not enough detailed to show everything. It gives an idea of my map though. I tryed to make it balanced the most possible. There is alot of work to place Xel'Naga Tower, Destructible rocks and LOS to give the players more possibilities than in normal map where there is around 2 or so, Xel'Naga towers and just few LOS.
Note: The image is from the Export file of the editor. The .tga is 17Mo... And you can't see it in brownser. You might prefer to download the map and look at it by yourself ;)
Also, it is published on NA server as "Ghost's Land (2v2)" by Fenix, me.
I like how you made the ground around the minerals / geysers.
Pretty interesting pathing, I think if you want to show the players that it is blocked, you should have filled the space with doodads, rocks, volcano, whatever you want to fit with the rest. The same way that in Blizzard's melee map sometimes in the primary base, some space could go outside the map edge, so Blizz fix that by filling the space to show the player that he can't go there.
Your map have alot of work on the textures. In general, it fits pretty well. Good job. As you said, it is not as balanced as Blizz map for example, but still. It's a max 3 bases map that will probably most of the time ends before you take the 3th. Though, it seems well. You made some copy / paste for terrain and there is no way to make it more balanced than having the same size of base! So yeah, it is a minimum balanced =)
Good terraining too, nothing too huge, that takes all the attention, just enough trees, just enought lava, etc. I think lights around the map doesn't fit much though. And you could probably have enought space for a 3th base at less.
I know we have already moved on to a new terrain exercise but thought i would show my melee map I am revamping with a more warcraft theme just for the fun of it. Still not finished I am reworking the main bases and the north part of the map still. The right expansion will be an island with cool boats and a bridge dock etc. Alot left to do if I want this playable but thought i would share anyways - thx for looking
It feels very 'honey I shrunk the kids'-like. Original theme! I guess someone could go further with that and do it in a Starcraft theme (that would make for an awesome melee map), but I quite like your setting. It could probably be a little bit more dynamic (it looks like a bunch of connected rooms, not as much a map - flying units will be OP in such a setting), but I'd like to see this finished.
