Afternoon people! This week I've come up with a theme that might be a little more accessible to the new terrainers. Next week's theme will be one that allows a little more freedom but generally encourages people to just come up with awesome stuff, so I can lure more minions aspiring terrainers in here.
Weekly Terraining Exercise #15
This week's theme will be "Say 'cheese'!". What this means is that I want you to make a landscape after a specific picture. You need to find yourself a picture of any kind of landscape and recreate it in the Galaxy Editor. Feel free to take some liberty if you feel like it (I don't expect you to position every single tree in the right spot), but try to capture the general essence of the scene.
If you do not happen to have one of your own pictures lying around you'd like to try out, I recommend googling "Nature", "Landscape" or a specific theme ("Jungle", "Mountains", "Desert") to find something nifty. Remember to try and supply us with the picture you've attempted to recreate!
I google'd "nature" and used the first picture that came up. I couldn't get the lighting right though.
EDIT: Redid the lighting and got closer to what I was going for.
WOW!!! I may not be able to do THAT! But, I can do something a little less challenging...RIGHT after I get done with Doite's game test at 2:30 today...maybe I'll find something to try and "copy" into the editor...cya later! :D
I'm sure you can do it x] I just made a path with some type of ground props I think, and use varying-sized LOS Blockers and other small plant doodads, and then used foliage to fill in the gaps.
Wow. I looked at the image on the left briefly first and I thought it was the real life picture. Then I looked at the one on the right and... realized that the RIGHT one was the real one. Great work.

Even though it's not like an exact replica, it's still really awesome. I couldn't get my plants to look as natural as you did. They still look really jagged and slightly pixelated.
Yeah, everything's on ultra. I think the reason my picture seem as natural (for me at least) is because of the lighting. I couldn't get it to look convincing enough x]
Well I tried playing with the lighting and water some more so there's the result on my original post. Guess I gotta play with lighting some more. Seems to be hard to get it to match.
Have you tried placing down sunbeams Bronxsy? That's what you're seeing on the real-life picture. Also, you could play with omnilights at the end of the river to recreate the "white glow"?
Edit: On another note, just want to express how awesome this is. There were some pretty good terrains in exercises like the Canyon Ambush (and that one that used a depth-of-field-altered camera in Mar Sara Blues was also cool), but these three are probably immediatly the best I've seen. Stuff like this needs to be used in played/playable maps.

I tried playing around with it, but it didn't come out so well. :( I wanted to add the sky, but I rly dont know how. :(
Edit: I fixed it up a bit more, but it's still missing something. I can't find a suitable tree, I can't get the sky the way I want, and I can't find suitable grass either. :(
Yuka, check the terraining FAQ topic to work out the sky - use the Bel'shir box. Add a LOT more grass - fill up the area with it and go right up to in front of the camera. Smooth out the mountains in the background and make the foresty area there a bit more hilly. Then post again - I'm curious what will happen.
Also Zarakk, I'd really like to give this one a try, to be fair, I've just been a bit busy, lately. I might get it done before next friday, though.

Thanks, I tried to make it very similar but it's really hard. Yours is really good, it looks really similar to the picture. I think its just the lighting that would definitely finish it off.

No I didn't try that, thanks. I added some and did some more stuff with the lighting. I uploaded another pic, probably my final one for this. It's in my original post. Do you know of anyway to add lighting to water, omni lights or any doodad lightings don't seem to effect the water, or at least I couldn't get it to.

I'm not completely happy with the result, but I'm gonna get some sleep now so it'll have to do.
Both look Great!

Hey guys, I found this one kinda difficult! I spent just over an hour on this again but I think it's not too bad.
@Bronxsy: Go
Ya...you did rly well, like everyone else, but you may want to try out different lightings until you get one that "actually" works. :D

This might simply be a graphics issue, Cbrag. Do you have your video settings turned to ultra?

Yeah, I feel the same way x] this WTE really set the bar.
You should enter this one too, Moz ;)
