Last week's Zerg Base and some of the comments made in the thread got me thinking, and I've come up with a new two-part idea for the WTE. First, this week's theme shall be 'Terran Settlement'. Similar to the Zerg base, this week's theme will simply be any kind of Terran settlement or base. Your terrain will need to include a couple of Terran buildings, both doodads and units. Make it as pretty as you can, and focus only on the Terran aspect of the exercise. Be sure to save your maps; next week we'll be creeping up eachother's submissions ;)
So I started playing with the editor again (had some time, had an itch), saw this and figured, what the heck, my terrain was crap at best. Now I'm far from done... but I'm at a loss for how to make my walls more interesting. I'm going for a colonial rustic look to things, so tons of billboards won't really work. My chosen tileset of Tarsonis may be working against me too. However, I'll throw it up there, please fire away critiques and hopefully pass some ideas for what I can do to my walls (or the rest of the terrain).

I was gonna take a break from terrain and work on models but I was thinking of adding a rural area for my map anyways.
Quick question, is rural area allowed? Not a settlement or base but somewhere where civilians live.
Haha, it's just an old joke. It was cooked up from a clip of Dustin Browder quite generously praising the Blizzard modeling team for the rocks in the WoL beta.
Anyway, I should tell you that I am working on a contribution to this, but it'll be a late one as I've got other stuff and another project to do ATM.

I do terrain stuff.

And in a Starcraft haiku,
...
That's all I can do!
I've decided to go on the most basical of ways possible, kinda reminding people of the start of Wings of Liberty and the thrill of fighting through Mar Sara.
Some things in here are not copies, but rather a tribute to EvindL and his campaign, particularly the stronghold defense map, which I consider the most well worked of all.
I think the ground could use some more work. For example, in the first screenshot, the ground is pretty much all sandy concrete, with almost nothing else. Maybe try adding a few more solid patches of sand, maybe with some rocks in them and a few plants. Speaking of rocks, you could try submerging rocks on the ground ever so slightly. From my past experiences, that makes them blend in much better with the ground, rather than just looking like a random rock sitting there.
For loose terrain substances (sand, snow, etc), it can look really nice if you pick a dominant wind direction and build up small drifts on the appropriate sides of buildings and cliffs. (Or, if you're after a REALLY windy environment, leave it clean everywhere except the wind shadows of objects.)
Same thing as above - feels a bit barren. Some hills/rocks/vegetation outside of the base would help a lot. Perhaps some decals inside the base to break up the empty concrete.
For spicing up the walls: Maybe a few rooftop doodads (Rooftop Entrance, Rooftop AC, etc) or a few panels of Installation Roof lowered until they're just barely sticking above the ground. Possibly some small pipes running along the walltops to different places. For a more militarized feel, barbed wire around the perimeter (sink some Security Fence doodads into the outer edge of the wall).
Ok, here's a rough version of mine. I wanted to create a Terran outpost area. While it is in the middle of a hostile environment, I wanted it to look as if its been there for a very long time, and is the place of operations to a small Terran group.

Good effort on the construction side of the buildings - a bit boring otherwise however. Make the terrain up (you've still got the rest of the week) and it'll look sick.
Weekly Terraining Exercise #114
Hey hey folks!
Last week's Zerg Base and some of the comments made in the thread got me thinking, and I've come up with a new two-part idea for the WTE. First, this week's theme shall be 'Terran Settlement'. Good luck and have fun!

Oh, this is a great opportunity to take some ideas from the WoL campaign. Some missions in particular:
-Cutthroat
-Media Blitz
-Engine of Destruction
And I'm sure there're other great examples to look at. I'll try this one out!
So I started playing with the editor again (had some time, had an itch), saw this and figured, what the heck, my terrain was crap at best. More rocks. Always more rocks.
@Nebuli2: Go
Did you say... rocks?
But yes, I agree; more rocks would help merge the base into the environment.
@HydraMannequin: Go
Some shrubs could be quite nice, too.
Since when is Dustin part of the rock fad? O_o

Sure. As long as 'Terrans live/work there' it goes.
My attempt.

Those towers need look-out posts. Overall I love it though. I like your angle... the Mar Sara missions were such a nice start to the whole story.

I'll add to Nebuli2's suggestion:

Looking pretty good, but it feels a bit sparse. Could use some plants/grass, and maybe some height work in the natural grassy areas.

Done, took faster than expected with work and all that, not much there in terrain but dem doodads
Imagined the large housing complex as a living area with the first floor housing a cafeteria, gym/pool, laundry, and a general store.
Just noticed the skewed window in the 6th pic...bleh

@madlibrarian: Go
This is the best I can come up with, I could probably surround the complex in trees/a forest but that won't change the inside at all
The cliffs would be better if they were a concrete type, like Korhal or New Folsom Manmade.
