For this week's theme, something new in the form of something old. "A Forlorn Battlefield" is a theme that, I think, we haven't had before in the WTE yet. What does this mean? Simple: create some sort of deserted battlefield from days past. It could just be a few days old, relatively fresh with corpses, but it could be aeons old with only terrain trails of the wars that waged here left.
Cool. Here are some suggestions; you could use the terrain heigh to vary a little to make some small sand hills / wind wave. You could also play a little bit more with the texturing around the structure, maybe even seeing the old ground metal mesh or something partially covered in sand. You could use these rocks as well. They have a ground base which takes the ground textures. If you use LotV assests, you could also add this destroyed tank. Maybe add abandonned vehicles. Maybe wrecked mule, or this broken mule, or broken thing like this. Maybe one or two trees. Etc.
These are just ideas of what you could add to polish a little more if you wish. :)
That's interesting. I very like the concept idea. I would have tried to play around the trees a little bit more. For example, this happend a long time ago so grass most likely took over the crash trail, so a little bit less brown, but without making it as shiny green as all the rest. Also I would add some underbrush or fallen trees along the trail and maybe some small grass doodads that tries to growth again. Maybe a bit of vines or dead trees stuck in the battlecruiser.. that would suggest there was real collision with the trees.
Very cool, nice one. ;)
Looking at it a little more as it is, it could be interpreted differently. Someone could say this battlecruiser fell a very very long time ago into a river. And as time goes on, the river dried out and the battlecruiser is now again visible with the little lake down the clif.
Storytelling is somewhat important in terraining, and this terrain has alot of potential depending of what you want to tell. :)
Edit: Tonight I just did this WTE and recorded as I go. Soooooo... I'll show a timelapse about my terrain. I still have to render the video and upload it and it's already late to I'll do it later tomorrow probably. I'll post the pictures though ;) I have no idea what happend in this place... but it was definitly the battlefield of something...
Really nice terrain man! I love the first 3 images and how you work with the camera angles and properties to make your terrain look even better. Your recorded terraining sessions are quite relaxing to watch as well.

I think I am going to use those destroyed buildings on my next map. I am making map where air units are not allowed so I dont have to worry about tall objects.
Thanks :D I like to record my terraining when I can. If I have a good idea of what I'd like to do, I can record. But you must understand that all this is done by "feeling" and not with any restriction. I just went random-ish and scrolled and see what could make a destroyed city terrain cool.
No problem, I don't see why I would prevent someone from using this map. I would share pretty much any work I do that is not super complex and required alot of time investment. But even there I would share the "how I did".
You would have to worry about blocking vision behind tall buildings though. ;) Makes sure to do it based on the default camera angle and make sure to add pathing manually to be sure everywhere around those buildings are unpathable correctly.
Note: My favorite part of my whole terrain, is the airport tower falling on the destroyed building in the 2nd screen. It just look perfect :D
Note2: I wonder if blizzard actually comes here often to look at the terrains...
Weekly Terraining Exercise #251
Hey hey guys!

Simple: create some sort of deserted battlefield from days past. It could just be a few days old, relatively fresh with corpses, but it could be aeons old with only terrain trails of the wars that waged here left.
As always, good luck & have fun!

Scbroodsc2, can you share your map?
@Scbroodsc2: Go
Your map reminds me so much of the old Commandos games that had landscapes similar to that.
@Terhonator: Go
Of course my friend. I attached the map to the previous post.
Here is the timelapse.
Working on projects:
u can make this in the starcraft editing software? this looks very cool, almost like the post-apocalypse environment of fallout 3. osem job bro!

Yeah you can make that in sc2... and even much much more stuff.
