For this week's WTE, we're having a rather special theme based on an idea by scbroodsc2: "Mapster Plays Editor". As a take on the infamous 'Twitch Plays Pokémon' project, us WTE'ers are going to make a melee map together. We'll use the same joint-terraining principle that we've used before: someone posts that they are working on the map, edit the post when they're done, and upload the new version. While there is a "I am working on the map" post up, people should lay off the map to prevent multiple versions from popping up. According to this principle, the aim is to create a fully playable melee map.
So without further ado, I'll leave it up to the first person to stop by to decide whether it'll be a 4-player map, and lay out the basic geometry.
Alright here is what I came with to set the basic of the terrain. I set up the 16 textures to the default of "Cybros" and "Aiur Temple". I added transition texture set to allow merging the textures. I added 4 very different cliffs to add as much possibilities as possible. The Cybros and Endion cliffs are somewhat similar allowing to create some "unused cybros base kind of stuff" and the temple cliff is more about very old stuff in the middle of the map. Also 2 cliffs have no lowest ground and 2 have a lowest ground. So we can simply use the hide cells to hide the cells of those who does not use low ground.
I placed the start location relatively randomly and some circles that "could" show the possible base placements. I'm not so good in melee balance so I'll leave the base design to someone else.
To the next person, you can remove all texturing demo in the middle and all the cliffs. You can also set back all terrain set to 1. Texturing will most likely be done later once the design is more started.
Beat me to it, I wanted to upload a blank tileset and claim it as my contribution.

Looking at map size compared to the other 1v1 maps, i might have choose a size a little bit big. We'll see.
Also, i just looked around to see if I can find a thread about guidelines of what should the map have. For example, only diagonal ramps, how much are the minerals (could copy paste from current ladder map to have exact same acceptable design placement), how big should be the main, the expo, what distance average should the enemy be from you, etc. These kind of guidelines would be helpfull, if anyone can find for lotv.
Alright, I went for the "Abandoned Cybros" theme... When i downloaded the map it was totally black, so i had to make a total copy of it... I used endion as the base and added the auir temple textures... You can always add the other textures...
also made the bases, from what it looks like this is going to be a standard 1v1 map...
Wait what!? Nooonoonono... What is not working? For me it loads all fine? I want someone else to try out to load the map i posted and see if its black as well. And it's not a "total copy" of what I did.. just think about the map scale 256x256 for a 1v1, that just cannot work. Well well that doesn't start well.
I'd be fine copying that parts you want to add, but we need to find what is wrong before continuing.

Edit: I randomly decided to work on this map. I created a layout for the maps flow. Anyone can feel free to make changes, what I've done so far is just an idea. Anyway, here it is.

Ohhh that's awesome! I like it alot. It's not really what I had in mind (obviously) but it's somewhat interesting. Of course there are a couple things that will most likely change. For example, I'm really not a big fan of "middle of the map expantion" they almost never get taken because it's too risky. So to me, that would need a little redesign. Also, I feel like the 3rd base is a little far from the natural, and the 4th is just far far away haha. Like, maybe if there was a little bridge in the big hole just to leave the size of a collossus to pass allowing expanding, but forcing decision making in where you want your army (as it takes time to make the army move through a small choke).
So yeah that's a very good start. Size seems correct to me, the middle could use some more detailled part / expansions.. There is alot of potential. I don't have time right now to work on it sadly, but I might tonight if no one else worked on it. :D

When opening the map, it says that I do not have the dependencies to do so. I only have Wings of Liberty, not Hots and Lotv... Is there any way to fix this? I REALLY want to work on the lowest level's and the fog levels's doodads...
Do you actually own them? If so, click no, then drag the map file back into the editor and it will work.

It's an error from Nova I'm pretty sure. It'll happen with any map you try to open. Like Jayborino said, you'll need to click no and then drag the map file to the editor window. Using hots and lotv in the arcade and editor is free for everyone. Also, sorry for skipping over you like that. I opened the map to make sure there wasn't an issue with it and then just kinda started editing it without realizing.
Yeah, the middle of the map expansion was a bad idea. I honestly wasn't sure what to do with that area so I just kinda put it in there. If anyone has a better idea, they shouldn't hesitate to completely revamp that whole area. Also that bridge idea sounds cool. My idea was kinda to make it so expanding wasn't trivial. Not sure if thats a good idea as I don't really play melee and have never made a melee map but I just kinda wanted to different stuff in the map layout to give people ideas.

So, I shaked the things up a little bit. Honestly, I don't think what I did was fully in the right direction, but it brings in a couple changes and ideas that could be develop further more.
Main changes are... the contour of all bases are now temple like leaving a gap all around the map. What I had in mind is not possible as I tried, but failed. (I wished I could use temple for low to lowest ground, and mid to high ground Cybros, on the same cell, which is not possible.) But it brang a new idea, rocks blocking the path all around so as game goes on you can use that to your advantage... I really dont know how that would play out and I doubt it would remain like that, but the idea was still interesting. Also there is the bridge above the hole which connects both side of the map without passing through the middle. And there is the middle instead of beeing low heigh its now highest allowing some advantage to the player taking the middle. There are now 4 ramps as well instead of 2. Overall, I feel like I shaked up the things more than did very productive things, but I'm sure this can end well. Oh and last thing, I did not touch the textures until all cliffs are set and really feels great. I still believe there are major things to change.
