Following up last week's busy WTE with some more of the ideas from the global WTE information and idea thread, this week's theme will be "Best of Both Worlds". What I mean by this Buster89 inspired idea, is that you create some kind of terrain where a drastic change in ecosystem/climate takes place. Like for example a lush jungle where crossing a border suddenly turns the whole place into a forest-fire stricken barren wasteland with nothing but ash and dead trees.
Oooh already got a few ideas though for one of them I kind of wish we had Heart of the Swarm already for the ice tileset (I know the Niffleheim textures are in the files but I'd need the doodads too for one idea)
Edit: Ok so I'm not sure if I will be entering or not, the ideas I had aren't panning out :-/
Also, Borg terrain is somewhat tempting given the title hehe.
Ok so, I start the deal with the ice mountains that meet the desert... I got multiple tries to get the lingthing look "well" but I don't think I got it yet. It is really hard to make the desert looks like a desert and the snow looks like snow in the same picture...as well as trying to have the feeling these moutains are huge even if they are very small hahaha.
Hot damn, nice job man. "Let me just burst in here out of nowhere with a completely detailed map!".
Jaxter; your map looks nice and balanced, though I reckon it can use some more touches and different focal points. Right now it's mostly trees and brush on the tranquil side, maybe you can spice it up some?
Alot of that looks soo good. Although as hinted by the screenshots the border between volcanic cataclysm and serene forest are quite sharp and straight not something i really appreciate, i would rather have a more dynamic and soft border, perhaps take a look at Mozared's 'Burning Streams' it has a pretty cool 'claw' like pattern of lava really tearing the landscape. Also can't help but notice the stairs that are big as houses and lead nowhere :D
You could do what i was planning to do this exercise and change the texture set back and fourth and reset the rocks to get both volcanic and forest-y rocks in your map but that could end up royally f*ing up your textures like it did to me, the trick is to make sure that the textures swap 'out' to the same texture they swapped 'in'. And have some preview pictures of what i managed to salvage:
I mean virtually anything. Your map right now is grass, ashy ground, bushes, trees, volcanic rocks and rocks. That's about three doodads, foliage and two textures. You can mix in at best six other textures, use other forest-y doodads to make parts of the wood stand out and seem less cloned, there's a gazillion redstone/char doodads to make the chaotic zone more interesting and your map could use some larger focal points in general (i.e. a river or such). Don't get me wrong - your map looks very nice for what it is, but your terrain as it is right now is something that could've basically been made in the SC1 editor. Turn it into actual terrain rather than something that looks more like a proper 'map'.
that could've basically been made in the SC1 editor.
Um, not at all. I did a lava terrain with alot of doodads and sprites using a special editor and I was not even close to something that really looks great. I wanted to mix up some doodads and try to make a mix of terrain like lava / snow or something like that but it's a little bit to complicate nearly impossible haha.
Sill, here is what I got from SC1 Editor! (For those who want to know, I used SCM Draft 2)
Note: When I re-opened the editor today... I was confused about how to use it loll! A few years ago I was making anything (almost) with this.
You're missing my point. Obviously you can't create a 3D environment in the SC1 editor that looks as well as virtually any SC2 terrain. What I meant was that you could create lava terrains with 1 texture and nothing but a couple of rocks in the StarEdit. Try recreating one of the others submissions in this thread in StarEdit - it'll never even come close.
Well here's a quick preview of what I'm doing: A secluded mountain shrine/temple in the midst of being overrun by Zerg creep and bioforms. I'm using this shot for now as I'm nowhere near done on the Protoss side of things.
Hopefully I'll get it to a reasonably finished state before Monday :)
Howdy all : D
I've been lurking for some time, and this weeks topic just brought me an idea. And because I had some free time this week, I made this thing.
General concept was a little city divided by lava river of tectonic origin.
1 Shot of the rift, which divided the city's main hall from the square in front of it
2 Main Hall
3 Destroyed Shoping Centre
4 Mining site
5 Mining site entrance&loading area
6 Power station
7 Car shop
8 Front side (before) of the car shop
Wow. The first word that comes to mind is apocalyptic! I love how you've captured the look of a fissure having opened up dividing the city. The placement of the cars especially give the sense of it having happened suddenly and without warning. Nice work!
