This week a theme as per an idea by ScBroodsc2 and Jackthearcher: "Sports". What does this theme mean? Simple: you create a scene that shows what you think would be the 'sport' that any race would participate in whenever they're not fighting. For the Terrans, this could be as simple as a soccer match - or Zergling round-up. For the Zerg, maybe some fierce survival-of-the-fittest style arena pit fighting could work. Use your imagination!
Well I spent maybe an hour on this getting the dimensions as accurate as possible. I believe I can safely say it's accurate up to 2 feet (made a slight error towards the end, and didn't want to redo everything for it). This isn't exactly finished, and I might make an actual game out of this, but I'm not sure if I'll have more time for this terrain this week so I figured I post some shots now.
P.S. I forgot to add HoTs dependencies so I apologize for the poor decal work.
Such an explosive soccer, nukes fall on the field? You know that gives me an idea of some soccer game where you kill the football players and that's how you take the ball from them and you build units to have new players.
Currently working on Zerg Fighting Arena, since they have an overmind and know what the other one is thinking, it's pure endurance, no strategy, may make a custom game out of it, were 2 random units fight, and you bet, but first, the terrain.
Man I love your terrains... EPIC, again... You should try to make your terrains more epic than EPIC.
I like the field of view, the shadows of the zerglings, the arena itself... You should not stay here...you got nothing to learn, you know everything. (joking of course, as you always keep learning no matter what)
Ok so... Let's give you a small challenge, make a screen in action with the marine or whatever fighting whatever with people cheering =P And try to add more details to the terrain, find a way to make it better or different, try to get different feelings out of it. And what about a thirth person view or first person view from the marine in combat?
I'm sure you can do it =P Find a little hole in your freetime :P
As an example of details you could add, you made the ground looks like sand, but nowhere you can see steps of previous combats. You could make a texture play here =P
@Scbroodsc2: Go
Thanks man! :D<3 (and I continue to do this when I can to CONTINE to learn with no hands on art class this semester haha.)
I will see if I have the time to do so, but I doubt I will find the hole :( . The feel that I was shooting for was an indoor, dark arena, filled with shady characters. My original Idea was a sort of beat out, small arena, out in the bright sun with hordes of people waving their money and bets in the air like crazed madmen as the gruesome battle took place in the sandy pit.
It eventually changed to an indoor arena, with a calm before the fight with some cheering due to the fact that I found myself wanting to show a somewhat finished product, and animations that fit the scene are difficult and time consuming to find, so I restricted the amount that was seen giving it a more indoor feel (also hiding the mostly empty beaches that did not have cheering people in them), and darkened the lighting up for the contrast and then played around with the camera for 20 or 30 minutes, shifting the units and camera around to fit the rule of thirds. (note, did not touch the contrast or the exposure drags, just turned all the lighting colors such as map tone, back, and key to black, or turned the multipliers to 0, it helps allot in indoor feelings and you add Omni lights for your lighting (may need a large white light just to see anything).)
Oh and it doesn't hurt to have two steps from hell playing in the background when I am working on an idea that I have a more clear picture of :) (sometimes had to stop the music in order to think through what to do next due to being stumped as to what to do or what doodad to use next 3 or 4 times)
Oh and instead of a 3rd person view, I made a 1st person view, with a model that I found that I absolutely had to use... (the Ultralisk)
Wow, really nice. Dat ultra...is the ultra you don't want to ever meet. However I feel like there is too much obstruction on the bottom, you can't see correctly... I was hoping to see more of the "Marine looks to Ultra in front of background" Right now it's more like you see "Marine armor with gun pointing/shooting to ultralisk that is part of the background" Of course you tried to simulate beeing in a CMC armor but... I really think it's taking too much space in the screen... I would try to make the ultralisk be more clean, keep the background like it is and give more place to see the terror.
Fun fact: The ultralisk looks like smoking with that bullet.
It is interesting =P But to break the repetitiveness, maybe have some stairs to move up or down for the spectators. A skybox would help alot also. I don't quite understand what I see in the mid-background; behind the units battleing and the spectators... Is that like a stack of mass dead marines on the right? Some texture play for the ground would be great. And another thing, try to get another camera angle, try to use the roll a little bit, I think this could greatly decrease repetitiveness. I know old school games doesn't have this kind of stuff, camera is always flat... but I think it could be nice. I like the life bars that you added =P
I overall, I think you got a good idea but you can still greatly improve it =P
Yeah, any projects even small ones like WTEs are time consuming. And most likely, the more time you pass making your WTE, the more it will be good, technically. Of course it's not always that as you can get epic results in a short time. I can make some very nice things with just a few trees and lightning play, but it won't be as good as if I take the time to place the trees on moutains and think to the camera and add stuff and more stuff...
Oh and random fact: You won't see me post here in the next two weeks as I'm going to France in few days. I wishes you all best results for your WTEs and personnal projects!
I've done the opposite, I've done a terrain for SC2 to make into a 2D combat stage (but with settings that make it look 3D), for a fighting engine (Mugen), was very good to have such a combat zone. Looks like I still have a pic hah
Weekly Terraining Exercise #139
Hey folks!

I am currently working on a Terran arena myself, I am curious how the 2 will compare :)

That's hockey not soccer XD. There aren't any good ice textures, believe me I looked.
@joecab: Go
we'll see this weekend, school and stuff will prevent me from finishing it before.

All right, I got ya, main reason why I was able to get a WTE done was due to labor day :)
So here is my entry for the WTE. It is a death arena on Mar Sara, how the sport is played, well, I am certain you all know how these things work :p

Are those the Aiur Chef audience benches?

Are you ready for the Mortal Kombat?!
Like the evil said in the movie : A flawless victory!
I'm proud of my picture, but I can already hear Scbrood : It's a repetitive design.
I know, but that's the goal (like the old arcade game)! :P
It is not a real sport, but it looks like UFC with magic power...

Ah yeah, nice comments again. I would like to make better pictures, but like anyone, I never have enough time to complete them.
I will release soon a library on a new kind of pathing, so this is why I'm 'botching' some of my pictures...
