I'll be brief: this week's theme is "The Labyrinth". Originally a theme from Greek myths, the idea is that you create virtually anything resembling a maze or labyrinth, with any function you can come up with. Good luck!
errr.... pretty new to sc2 and map editing, so i decided to give this challenge a try. im halfway done but now i dont know how to take the screenshot of my map in-game.(i dont want to take the screenshot in the editor because the cliffs for some reason are messed up :/ ) also, i remember there is a way to go into gameplay view on the editor itself, so i want to try that, but i forgot how to do so. i know it is somthing like ctrl+shift+???.
I suggest you check out the Terraining FAQ, my friend. Nearly all of these questions are answered in there. I'm not sure how your cliffs are 'messed up', but if you've got the problem I think you do there's also a fix for that in the FAQ.
alright, here it is. but people who look at my map and think "this one sucks so bad >:( ", plz note that i am quite new to sc2 and map editing and this is one of my first maps. (i think the third legit map) i know it sucks compared to all the others, but im gonna try to do every single WTE from now on and try to get as good as any other pro map editor!!! :D:D:D:D:D:D
PS. on the last screenshot you can try to solve the maze if you want :) there actually is only 1 way of making it through btw
PPS. im not a good photographer either, so deal with the screenshots :)
Heya Cheddar, first off, nice labyrinth - the fact you've actually made a maze that works is very cool. Nice job. Few tips - in the doodad section of the editor is one known as VikingSkyDoodad or something to that effect, when you're done making a map you can place that down so it looks like there is a sky rather then just a black nothingness. Secondly, whilst what you've done is great, why not change the outside of the map - perhaps make it a jungle, or rocky canyon, or something to change it from the blue puddle we have surrounding your awesome maze at the moment? - Good terrainers will make every part of their map look unique and interesting - Telthalion's burnt out / destroyed city comes to mind - every part of that had something that caught the eye. And last point from me here, why not do more with textures ? E.g. you've used the raise tool to make the platform for your maze, why not colour the new 'cliff' like areas of the map a dark dirt / rocky texture? Make them look like they could actually stand up at those angles?
Overall, impressive stuff though for a newcomer - kudos.
thx for the comment and tips. i still want to keep the fog around the maze to make it kinda look like it is somwhere high up, so i added some jungle just around the maze. i also added and fixed up some stuff. oh and also the viking skydoodad or whatever, i coudnt find it :/, but im pretty sure u were talking about a skybox which added (which i learned to do through moza's terraining FAQ) :D
Looks a lot better. But there are still a few things that could use some work:
- The textures are too uniform. Try using a soft noise brush to rough up the open areas of dirt/grass with slightly darker versions of dirt/grass. Also, same thing for under trees and right next to cliffs/walls. It helps make them stand out a bit more, and look more natural to boot.
- The trees seem a bit too evenly spaced. I've discovered that trees generally look more natural when they're slightly clumped, with just a few strategically scattered elsewhere.
And on a smaller note: you might soften the falloff of the fog and lower the starting level a bit - the change from nothing to solid is a bit abrupt.
sigh... looks like im still a long way from near perfection. i think im gonna leave this for now and see what the next WTE is, due to the lack of time this week and weekend. :)
ill make sure i remember the things u said tho! ill make sure to incorporate those ideas and tips to the next map i make
