Over the next couple of weeks, I'll be going on holiday and as such I won't be able to upload a new WTE next week or the week after. Because of this, I've decided to do a single three-part WTE with a rather extensive concept. I will reveal the first theme this week, and next monday my trusty spoonman TheAlmaity will reveal the second theme in this thread. Another week later he'll reveal the third and final theme. All three of these themes will have a connection to each other that won't be obvious until they are revealed, and as such you folks will be terraining yourself a larger-scale project as time goes on. If you miss a week, no sweat: you'll be able to participate in newer themes regardless.
That said, here are the themes revealed so far:
Week 1 (July 14-21): "A Natural Planet". The idea behind this theme is that you guys design the looks of a 'planet' on a larger scale. This means you'll be looking at an area of land through a bird's eye view. You don't need to outright try to create an entire planet, but imagine yourself looking at a planet through a telescope, and seeing a large area of its land along with some obvious landmarks. Mountain ranges, large craters, even an alien forest: that's the scale I want you guys to work on. Whether the planet is fiery, frosty or even jungle-y is up to you, as long as it isn't inhabited. In this first exercise you'll be fairly unlimited and as such, use your imagination and go wild! One last thing: be sure to upload the map along with your submission.
Week 2 (July 21-28): "Complex-ity". This week's theme builds upon the theme of the previous week. If everything is gone right, by now everyone should have submitted various planet-theme terrains in all shapes and colours. The challenge this week is relatively simple: pick any of the planet-terrains that have been previously sent in, and terrain what you would think a Terran, Zerg or Protoss 'complex' build on said terrain would look like. Whether you build a huge Terran research centre, create an awesome custom made Zerg Hive with tendrils or create a huge stone Protoss temple is up to you, as long as it displays the outside area of some kind of amazing building owned by any of the three races.
Week 3 (July 28-4 August): "The Halls". As some of you might have guessed at this point, the last theme for this WTE project is relatively straightforward: grab a new map and terrain the indoor section of one of the complexes made last week. If someone made that Terran research centre, make us your rendition of what it looks like inside. The same for that Zerg Hive (slimy corridors!) and the Protoss Temple. Try to keep the outside's geometry in mind so that you have sort of a set lay-out. Curious to see how well this plays out!
To everyone who finds the time to terrain over this lovely summer: good luck, and enjoy. I hope to see some smashing contributions when I get back!
Well, I'm a bit of a perfectionist, so I'd simply try to make entire forests out of normal tree doodads. Perhaps creating another tree doodad that is twice the normal size isn't a bad idea for this purpose, though. Also, you'd be able to forego some detail (like small rocks and plants).
I think you like Bel'Shir and Aiur trees ... xD I feel like it's overall too similar and you lose some details that looks awesome such as the tilted pilars on the right.
Oh wow. I really like the atmosphere that comes out of this... A bit more details in the terrain such as adding some smaller crystals around the big crystals to make it less sharp. I have a bit of difficulty to get the scale of the terrain when looking at it overall. I only know how big it is when looking at the small bridge... Maybe you could do something about it? :P
Perhaps you could try painting the steeper parts of the terrain with a rock texture, or even using rock doodads? The terrain just looks a bit awkward with the texture on the steep parts being the same as the rest of the terrain.
What Nebuli and Brood are saying is true, but otherwise amazing terrain Terminator. I like the others in here too, even if the ice/forest one feels a bit off. With this much variety, the next part is going to be amazing. Good luck everyone, I'll check back in a few weeks :)
Anyway, I see no one actually uploaded a proper map file :( Guys pls. Upload the maps! They're important for Part 2!
I've put part two into the original post, but here it is again:

Here's a screeny of a WIP map
Much to be done ofcourse, but I like how it started out
Probably not gonna finish this, started another project that keeps my attention a lot more ;S

I like that lagoon a lot! Curious to see how this pans out.
@Mozared: Go
Thanks :P
Just a question: how would you personally go about having trees? Would you have any at all or just make them very small (hard :( )
@ThePhail: Go
Well, I'm a bit of a perfectionist, so I'd simply try to make entire forests out of normal tree doodads. Perhaps creating another tree doodad that is twice the normal size isn't a bad idea for this purpose, though. Also, you'd be able to forego some detail (like small rocks and plants).
I haven't done a WTE in ages! Here's something I made. Maybe it needs more rocks.
@Exaken: Go
I don't believe I spot a single rock in your terrain. I am very disappointed.
@Exaken: Go
I very much like that. The trees feel unnatural with no snow on their leaves, yet the contrast looks awesome.
@Exaken: Go
Not bad!
Perhaps you could play with the colour of the ice cliff doodads, to make them match more to the white snow.
Make sure to use my All Doodad pictures http://www.sc2mapster.com/assets/all-doodads/! This gives ideas and make it simple to search what you want. :P

I actually think this should be posted as a suggestion in all WTE's...
This is my WTE in weeks of been out now and it feels like ages! still working on it

I don't think I've ever actually done one of these but here's my WIP of what I've started working on for fun :)

Is the map file for using another person's terrain and make something out of it?
