As a follow-up on last week's theme and as per idea of Taintedwisp, this week's theme is "Aerials". The idea is that instead of a regular landscape, you build us some kind of cloudscape. Think along the lines of Zerg organisms flying through the clouds, or perhaps a top-down view out of a Viking's cockpit onto a battlefield - as long as it has something to do with the air or sky, it goes; get creative!
Ok so, I've made a kind of something in the space with Zerggggs on it. Nothing really special. I first tryed to do the view from the interior of a viking, but it's really hard to do an interior view. There is only very few doodads with transparency that could be used as window. So I just decided to make a 3th person view from the viking.
Basicly, I grabed a lot of Zerg doodads placed mostly randomly and here the result haha.
I really need to continute the pictures of all doodads. It is sooo usefull to rapidly find something that could be interesting to add / used to do something else like for the viking interior, it's hard to find the good doodads to make it looks great.
Aw just noticed I sometimes got a unit or a doodads selected.... >.<
So here's a WIP of my entry. I wanted to show a Terran Planetary invasion from the bridge of a Battlecruiser. Originally I did intend to have ground in it as well and some shots looking down on a battlefield but I just couldn't get the terrain to look right as the edges of the map were plainly visible with the angles I'm going for and I can't reduce the far clipping and still have the sky ><
Also the lighting for the bridge seems to have taken over the whole map and the units didn't have any shadows so looked weird too.
So I guess you could say this force is moving through the high atmosphere :) once I've got all the ships worked out (I want to add moar!) I'll have a go adding wind and maybe some clouds (if I can ever get them to be visible...) to look like they're moving through cloud cover. May also add Zerg/Protoss fliers coming up to meet them. I kind of like the idea that perhaps this is one of the incursions against the Zerg Warfield mentions in Wings of Liberty :D
Oh and that guy totally isn't Horner, it's some Dominion officer ;)
P.S. I'm also giving forced perspective a go - a lot of the ships further away are also shrunk to try and give a sense of distance. I might try adding some that look like they're coming out of the other cruisers too...
The Zerg airforce sounds nice, though what just came to my mind is a line of skyscrapers in the distance. That should create the illusion of a ground-world you were looking for while not forcing you to mess with the map borders?
Hmm good idea, and fits with my original concept which was the fleet flying over a city warzone, nice idea! And as I'm in complete control of the viewpoint it doesn't matter that there's no ground beneath them, as you can't see it!
Thanks Mozared :D
By the way, does anyone know if it's possible to have the fog behave in a.. depth of field fashion I guess? What I mean is, like how it normally gradiates from very dense at the lowest point to reduced density vertically - but along horizontal distances. That is, the ships and/or buildings further away would be fogged but stuff closer to the camera would be less fogged?
I like that, it's not bad at all. You captured the feeling of height really well with those oversized doodads. I'm not sure about your actual terrain/floor, though - I reckon you should just lower all of that into the fog and then add some more of those rock arches, spires and trees. That should give you an even better feeling of height without having the actual floor around being akward. You'd have to remove the hydra's and such and should probably add some more flyers, though.
Wow. That's an amazing staging ground for a cinematic. The only thing I'd say you need to add is a few more trees/treetops for better height effect. Otherwise, I'm loving it. Good job!
Yea I don't undertand why it does that and it really bothers me and makes cinematics so much harder. Though I know I have managed to get them to load before I just don't remember how.
So here's an update. I think I'm getting closer composition wise though I think I may still tweak the lighting a bit. I've also got about a dozen different variations on camera angles in the map, still need to decide on the perfect one ^^
Looking great! My only comment would be the placement and amount of fliers. It seems a little bit over the top right now? How does it look if you mess with the height some more, having a couple of muta's appear as if they're coming from higher up in the sky? Additionally, with the Zerg and Terran forces so seemingly close to eachother, what I think is missing is explosion clouds and projectiles and such. What I had in mind is the Zerg fleet approaching in the distance, but with what you've done you're insinuating the battle has already started - which means it needs explosions and battle stuff.

Weekly Terraining Exercise #103
Hello again folks!
Good luck and have fun!

I haven't done one of these in a while... challenge accepted
So is the next WTE going to be about War, Science or a Highway? Or maybe it could be about that ball game im the fridge.
@Stealthsam: Go
The next WTE will be about recreating specific places in Hollywood ;)

hehe, I will try to come up with something sometime this week.

Anyway enough talk from me. Enjoy! :)

You will find what you want here I guess: http://www.sc2mapster.com/forums/development/terrain/19589-the-fog-distance-from-the-camera/#p4

Is that pure luck that the last 2 WTE are the same name as System of a down?
Working on projects:
@Scbroodsc2: Go
no, the first was named after Soad, and then I requested the 2nd :P.
@Scbroodsc2: Go
Thanks, that helps lots!
I'm going to feel inferior now. Had 45 minutes to kill, so tried this one out.
I didn't really capture the effect I was going form but at least I tried...
Give criticism and I might try this one again before the week is over.

Ah, here we go!
Whoops, map bounds...

It's too bad importing terrain into the cinematics editor clears out all of the doodads. :(
