How come that lik 80% of the successful maps on bnet EU are seriously bad and unpolished? Many US->EU ports are not localized, td maps are missing basic feature like a solid income/interest system, sometimes you can't even see how much money you get from killing enemies, many maps are spamming high amounts of error messages etc. I mean it's really not that hard to create those basics, why not do it when you go through the process of creating custom units etc. anyway ?
Please guys, when releasing a map to the public, make sure it's at least a bit polished, free of bugs and spelling mistakes. Thanks
To mapmaker's credit, it takes a lot of time and effort to deliver a truly polished product. My map was done for three weeks before I published it simply because it took that long to make it presentable - way more goes into setting down the absolute basics of a map than you'd think. Like, hundreds of hours more than you'd think. Besides, considering map publishing only lasts so long as the beta (three more days), mapmakers want to get their one shot at glory in before really epic maps come out when the game's released.
But on the other hands, mapmakers need to suck it up and polish their maps. A poorly polished map simply isn't fun.
Once you take care of the localization errors some of the maps on Bnet are fairly polished. That being said Pixartist is right when looking at a lot of the maps listed on Bnet, even with localization, are quite rough. I think it all depends on the mapmaker's point of view. I can see why many like to release here on Sc2mapster cause it's helpful to have other people look at what you are doing in development stage of a map. Bnet is different, IMO I wouldn't release anything unpolished for actual play and enjoyment. I also can agree with Pyro about polishing taking tons of time. Just through personal experience we've probably poured about 500 man hours into our project so far and almost half that time has been used making sure anything we have done is very polished and professional looking.
I have spent quite a while cleaning up small details in my map but at the end of the day you want people to try it. With the release of the publishing system I even had to add a spelling mistake into it because the word Support was not allowed and so I removed a P to let it get through the filter...
I am sure once official publishing is released the most popular maps will be the ones that are polished but for now everyone is just trying out interesting things :P
Most polished map may not be the most interesting to play. You will more likely be playing the same map multiple times in order to understand what to do, try to exploit all the weaknesses ... And since the top maps are the most played, it's going to be upper in that list!
Well, there were few maps for wc3 that were polished. Why dota was so popular coz it had both, balance, fun and it was polished.
Castle fight was also fun and quite balanced.
TcX was polished but to complex and slow.
Mass Destruction was fun and polished. But a only for few players...
Takes time. All after all, 80% maps are just garbage. And same thing will be here. But hey. Great maps should be supported and commercialized. And weak ones should just be there. All bad maps are leading into something new. People are aving fun creating maps so let them be :) .
If you spend time polishing a map your map will be on page 3901248210391204812091039 in the map list when it is finally released. The only way to beat the system is by outracing the other maps so yours is first.

Also, exploiting broken maps so you win is fun.
This.
Also, new versions start at the bottom of the popularity list and stay there.
Thirdly, it's still beta, the editor is still new.
Fourthly, (correct me if i'm wrong) without publishing a map it is not possible to play/test it online without 3rd party programs
@bradleo:
The thing is, many maps are full of serious bugs, many even have tons of error messages. I was not talking about the finishing touch or perfect balancing, I just meant, people should release PLAYABLE maps.

just fyi, it does not have to be an us -> eu port for missing localization.
the localization of GE is fucked atm, so even if a german client publishes a map, noone else except german clients have localization.

Lol OUR may be polished(ish) but its not balanced at all.

Release fun map that everyone will enjoy. Then polish it as fans are requesting. Path to victory.
