Been trying to build an ability for some time without much success, so was hoping someone could instruct me how to do, or at least guide me in the right direction.
The ability I want is one that shoots a projectile from the unit towards target point (should be cast on the ground), and when it gets to the area, the projectile should explode, doing damage to units in the area (extra damage to structures, but think I've got that sorted). If possible, I'd like to have the targeting look like when you cast an area of effect spell (such as Psionic Storm).
So i'm right that you want an ability that fires a missle to an unit that explodes on impact?
Should be done very hardly.
So you have to get an ability that uses effekts with target similar to fungal growth.
I think the missle must be done by an acteur.
But first we will focus on the ability itself. Okay we got an ability. There you can set costs, range of the ability and a targetingfilter. You will also find a value for effects but you haven't got anything to fill in until yet.
So we have to create some effects.
Well your ability should target more than 1 unit so your effect must search for targets. Switch your data editor to effects and create a new one with the effecttyp "effect damage". So we are very close to the end of all this.
Set the kind to splash and area arc to 360 degree, an amount and range like ever you want. Under attributbonus you can modify the damage against some armorkinds. The impact location should be targetunit/point.
All whats left to do is to connect your ability with your effect and then you should be done.
simply put you want the ability to do an effect - launch missle. On impact the missle should do a effect - search area. the search should do an effect - effect damage.

I know it's not what you're looking for but it could be easily done using triggers
Yeah, I've been looking at that a bit as well, but seems like such a simple ability should be doable without the use of (too many) triggers.
