Alright, there are a couple of older threads on this topic, but none of them appropriately address the issue anymore after 1.3.
My problem: Spectators don't work when I am using game variants. Why? If I open all of the player slots and set the max team size to the max then sometimes it will allow spectators, but that completely ruins the lobby interface and my map, as it allows players to join with too many people on a team.
What I want from the lobby:
======= Game Type - 1v1
========== Team 1
Slot Open
========== Team 2
Slot Open
I can achieve this, but not while still able to add spectators or make spectators. The changes to Game Variants in 1.3 were supposed to be an improvement, but all it seems to have accomplished is breaking spectators.
Please please somebody help me out here. I really hope one of you has a solution.
Spectators break my map as well. If I add observers in the lobby and change some team assignments afterwards, the lobby might even end up being 3v5 or 2v6 instead of the 4v4 I originally set.
I have no idea, what I could have done wrong for my lobby to support that (seriously, if I set my lobby to 2 teams of 4 players each, how the hell is it supposed to end up 2v6?), so I am gonna blame Blizzard and say, its a bug with the lobby.
Edit: Hm, I also want to make a map like a blizzard's map where it has multiple categories i.e., Custom, Melee, Co-op VS AI. I guess this can be done with game variants (with spectators and referees)?
Edit: Okay, I noticed something in a blizzard map's in-game lobby. Where can I find Observer Type in SC2 Editor so that it has two values: Spectator and Referee?
Has anyone ever found a solution for this issue? I feel like it has been crippling the mapping community for years now because I have run into it on every major mapping project I attempt but I see very little information about it anywhere. Does everyone know something I don't?
Right now it continues to be if I try to use a game variant at all it disables spectators in my map. I remember being able to work around this once before by swapping some map files between my infected map and an uninfected one...but now I can't even seem to get that to work.

I cant even get it to allow me to create spectators!
@rtschutter: Go
Buuuuump. I need help with this also.

Can't find a solution to this too. If anyone can enlighten us would be great! (Sorry for 2years+ necro bump)
I sorry to bump this thread but I do not want to create a new one because this is the same issue for about 7 years now.
Some ppl like Ahli found a method to allow "Game Variants" and spectators (read carefully):

I have a workaround for 1on1-Maps:
Conclusion: If an Arcade-Game (or CG) is able to create a Replay, you can use this (ugly) workaround, to allow spectators.
