EDIT: Updated the title after Bioautomaton answered my first question. Please jump down to my second post for the updated problem :)
Hello there!
I'm currently working on the texturing of a melee map I've created. I have however run across some problems. I would like to add graphical effects like the ones I've highlighted in the picture link below. Any idea on how you can add these? and where to find them in the first place? :)
Secondly. Is there anyway to rotate a texture at a set location? On the same picture link you can see that Blizzard is using a texture on the ramp itself, but that texture looks really weird when placed on a ramp that is facing in a different angle. So I would like to rotate the texture on each ramp to make sure it looks more appealing.
Two things are at work here for your first question
First off, the "special texture" you're seeing on the border, is actually the "Decal" doodad, variation 4. You could achieve a similar effect if you wanted a physical border with variation 1 of the "Ground Props" doodad. It's fantastic for things like curbs.
The other "special texture" is variation 22 of the "Decal" doodad again. Other variations include different line types, warning labels, arrows, etc. It's obviously good for building roads (something I'm working with quite a bit, heh) and other such th ings. The yellow version is just a recolored version. You may also want to try messing with the HDR multiplier to darken it slightly.
Secondly, I've not figured out a good way to rotate or offset textures for terrain, but a great alternative solution for your ramp problem would be to use the "Terran Tarmac" doodad, which acts a lot like a splat from WC3. It applies itself to the ground, in other words. Try playing with that and you'll see what I mean. Independent scaling of x and y will make it a breeze to ensure it fits your ramp properly, too.
Been looking for the Terran Tarmac as well so a great advice! :)
I've encountered a problem when I'm working with decals, terran tarmac and lights. They are not visible in the editor, as soon as I load the game they are there and everything works perfectly, but as soon as I'm back in the editor they are invisible.
Now I use hotkeys a lot, so it isn't impossible that I've accidentally hit a hotkey that disables this type of doodad (although I haven't disabled doodads in general) Any idea on how to resolve this? Cause lining up the decals without actually seeing them sound like a hell of a lot of work :P
a side question: Any way to scroll through the variations of a doodad before actually placing it?

I was looking for these decals as well, Now I see why I couldn't find them heh. I have this same problem of not seeing the graphic for them unless I am in game.
Hi had the same problem after some research found out that problem is caused by edior video settings set to low. now trying to rigure out which setting is it. also map must be reloaded after each setting changed for it to have impact on decals visibility
EDIT: its effect details, needs to be at lest @ medium
With this limitation, I advise against using decals for anything crucial since some players may not be able to see them whatsoever, and will not think to turn up this setting (nor will they appreciate being urged to change their settings for your map)
However, I think it should be possible to flag decals (or a duplicate of the doodad) as a lower-resource object and force it to appear on lower settings. I've peeked around but have no idea if this is possible or how it might be done.
I'm pretty sure they mean that the lights weren't showing up in the editor. They work fine in game.
I'm sure you've figured it out by now since this post is quite old and possibly made before this was added but comma and period scrolls through the variations of the doodad.
Since this thread is about the Decals doodad, have any of you been able to get a decal to show up over a road from all angles. I have a decal placed on a road and it looks good from some angles but if I zoom out a little, it disappears. It does it in the game and out.
1. Click "File,"
2. Click "Preferences"
3. On the side bar, at the very bottom, choose "Video"
4. Uncheck the "Match Game Settings" checkbox
5. Set the "Overall Quality" pull-down menu to "High"
6. Click "OK"
HOW TO SWITCH BETWEEN VARIATIONS OF A DOODAD...
There are two ways to do it.
1. If you like using hot keys, than "<" and ">" will change the variation of a selected doodad.
2. If you've already placed the doodad, than
- a. Press SPACE BAR to go into selection mode,
- b. Select the doodad and press ENTER to open the "Object Properties" window.
- c. Change the number on the "Variation" pulldown menu.
I don't know of any other way to do it, but I'm sure there is one more way.
But it's all just different ways of doing the same thing. What I've told you should get the job done.
