I just started mapping 2 days ago so please be a little bit patient with me. =)
These are the problems/questions that came up while creating my first custom map. (It's supposed to be something like AOS from WC3, hope you'll notice when you take a look at it.)
- How can I set a Number (in this case: A time for several Periodic Events) as a variable?
- Is there a way how I can delete this annoying "An ally's unit is under attack"-Warnings and Sounds? Since in a AOS there are fights all the time.
- There is this really awesome doodad called Zhakul'Das Obelisk which I want to turn into a shop, but I don't know how since it's not a unit. I tried to take some unit and just change it's model (I picked the supply depot for this) but it turned out to be really small after that and I couldn't place any other supply depot on the map.
- I watched a pretty nice tutorial from this website concerning the creation of heroes and items and despite the fact that I thought I had done everything right it turned out to be not. (I checked and rechecked it like a hundred times) Could someone please take a small look at this problem? I'll upload the map at the end of this thread. The hero and the two units I have created so far are in the upper left corner of the map (Hero Zealot, Hero Psi Blade and Speed Charm).
And, well, there is a pretty specific wish I have. I want to make items when they're dropped to appear as a really really small supply depot. :D In my mind it's the best thing you could do since there are no small treasure boxes as in WC3. (If you have a better idea, I'd be glad to hear your suggestion.)
Feel free to criticize me, I won't start crying I promise.
Any suggestion, idea, simplification or help is more than welcome.

Create variable, it's an integer by default, then put that variable as the time for periodic events.
Also, I suggest you try to do something else without heroes. They're really complicated things, and 2 days of mapping is a bit too little imo. Try to do something simpler (like a tag game (we need more of those), strategy thingy, or tower defense), and come back to this when you're done :)
-to turn those off i would suggest looking in the data type alerts under advanced.
-For the shop just make a new unit and duplicate it, make sure to duplicate the actor, then in your new actor find the model field and change it to the obelisk.
i might look at ur map later, for now its 5 am and im tired....
for the depot thing do the same as the obelisk and change the scale on the actor down
PS: don't do a TD everyone does TDs. I'm doing a TD, but at least its a Tower Wars.....
I know make Sheep vs Rabbits that game was fun.... scratch that don't make sheep vs rabbits, i'm going to make sheep vs rabbits. right after im done with Line Tower Wars.....

Hey, thx for your answer. I already tried it this way but when I want to set the variable I've created as the time for my periodic events it doesn't show up in the "variable-categorie". I love working with variables since it makes everything so easy once it's set up.
Well, about this "do-something-else-thing"...I like to throw myself in at the deep end. :) It's like cubing and stuff like that once I have something in my mind I keep on learning until I'm able to solve it. (But I'll of course keep your suggestions in my mind and start doing another kind of map when my hero's not complete in like a week.)

I'll try out everything you've said and post the result soon. (or maybe my next failure :D )
I was thinking about making tower wars but there are soooo many on bnet as you said. An AOS map, in contrast, I haven't seen at all.
Best wishes,
