So I was creating this amazing map, something that was never done before I was all excited and hyped up about it spending 50+ hours just on getting the terrain and doodads correct. A couple triggers in between but yea.
Then I came across a website called SC2Mapster.com and started browsing, and I came across a map called Catalyst which was exactly like my map, and again I have never been to this website or heard of this Catalyst map until now. I was a bit disappointed, i wanted my map to be Unique for a little bit before people recreate smurfs. At this point I'm contemplating to just start something new. But nope, I go ahead with it anyway and hope people will believe me that it was not a copy.
So I am going to go and finish this map, get it done announce a closed beta and bamf. Another thing happen. My Mother informs me tonight that the computer did a Delete files thing when you boot it up after my Brother was on it. Guess what? The assets folder and all the crap I had for this map was gone. deleted somewhere in the abyss.
So thats my "cool story bro" and I don't know what to make now. I'm obviously not going to recreate because someone else has made the map. Again, in no way was I copying, I was contemplating this idea since beta. Finally learned the editor to do some stuff.
No idea what to make now, I'm a sad puppy that needs inspiration.
inb4 cool story bro.
P.S In no way was I trying to copy someones map or offend anyone in this thread, just simply looking for inspiration.
P.S.S I had a back up of the map. but the map wasn't deleted some base assets folder was and is nowhere to be found on my comp, not even the recycle bin.
There are a lot of great little flash games on websites like addictinggames.com or New Grounds, or play some Multiplayer customs, or browse this website for inspiration. Or play the single player campaign. I personally think Blizzard did an amazing job on the campaign.
Flash games should be good inspirations, you dont have to copy it all the way, improve it more complex to fit a sc2 map. I suggest another site for flash game : http://www.armorgames.com/
Also I have a bunch of projects hanging without time to develop them. If you feel like taking over one, contact me first
Would you feel better if I tell you the map Catalyst (and probably your map as well) isn't very unique? There have been other very similar maps around for a long time.
Exactly, 47% of the maps have their origin in Starcraft, 47% have their origin in Warcraft 3 and 6% are unique minigames or games which use the new possibilities of the Galaxy Editor.

I want to make a Unique game. Something new right? ;-)
@Wakeman I seriously didn't know. Thats kind of a bummer. Oh well, back to the drawing board!
Not to get all metaphysical but nothing's "original". One of the coolest, most unique maps I've ever seen on this website was Malu05's Origins map [ ] (to say nothing of mappers like programmer), but even Origins has taken inspiration (it would appear) from other games like Spore, or what have you.
I'm not trying to be negative, just trying to say don't get hung up on trying to create a mind blowing map that no one's ever seen before... because I guarantee there's already someone who's thought about it or done it. What you should focus more on is having a combination of elements (potentially inspired from other games) that make your game replayable, fresh and fun. Those things will make it original, and stand out.

.......should never have taken 12 years though.
