I know Function type validators and the Target Sorts data type are used by the Tactical AI Data data type which is put in the AI: Tactical AI field of the Units data type while the abilities themselves also have Target Sorts for determining the ideal target.
There were also a few campaign levels which have trigger based AI. I believe the ghost nukes and the Diamond back moving backwards while attacking were two such examples. Should probably be able to find them in the later HoTS levels.

Where can I see the logic behind how the A.I. uses spells? (such as validators)
