I've done something very similar to this, essentially making creeps drop a minerals powerup on death and disabling the visual for the powerup itself, leaving only the "+# minerals" indicator. For your situation, I would advise playing with the player field for the effect, and trying out both the "handled" and "exhausted" fields for the death response. If I remember right, one of the two fields didn't work for me, while the other one did.
I've currently set it as the handled, exhausted, and even as a straight up on death effect from the modifications field. Unfortunately, none have worked. I hope I don't have to apply the bounty buff from the attacking player or something like that.
I believe your looking for the loot system. It will also allow you to spawn items/bounty or combination in a probability you like randomly. onetwo has a tutorial on it.
Else have a damage response on defender that triggers when damage is fatal that uses a Modify Player effect. Make sure the modify player effect is not targeting the source or caster.
