I was wondering how to create a WC-3 Meat Wagon-style disease cloud attack. That is to say, how to get an attack to leave behind a lingering AoE cloud of damage. Is the cloud a unit? How would it be possible to create the cloud upon the projectile reaching its target point?
Just the disease cloud isn't all that hard. You could make it a unit, but I wouldn't really recommend it. You could instead use a Create Persistent effect on the target point, which executes a Search effect periodically. This search then calls a damage effect on all units in the area or applies a behavior, which then causes damage, if stacking is an issue.
This would only handle the mechanical part, for the visuals of the cloud, you would need a Model actor with a model resembling your disease cloud (look through the Zerg models, you shoud find something matching). You would base it on ModelAnimationStyleContinuous and handle its creation in the Events + field, by adding events like this:
Effect.Persistent.Start
->At Effect
Create
Effect.Persistent.Stop
->At Effect
->FromEffectTreeDescendant
AnimBracketStop BSD
The persistent effect would be executed by the Impact effect of a Launch Missile effect, probably from a Set effect, since the missile also has to cause impact damage.
