I want a basic attack to be able to attack a point, so I can use triggers to make some units constantly fire at a point. However, When I change the attack launch missile effect to target point, the actor no longer functions and nothing appears and the behavior I want to be activated is not used. It also will not attack the point, so it wasnt very useful.

you need a dummy target effect for your attackaction-actor (launch-missile effect), if you leave it blank it doesnt work properly.
cannot say more until you post your effects and maybe actors(xml view is ok).
it's always useful to have a trigger with Effect used as event and check if a certain effect is even executed at all.

I know this may not be much of a consolation right now, but Void will include this natively (Attack fire at a point).
