So I have an effect that gives 5 minerals when applied. I want to make it a behavior for a unit, so that this factory produces 5 minerals every 10-15seconds of game time. How do I get this effect onto the factory or behavior? Where do I look? Does the behavior have to be a specific type?

I assume you want an auto harvester like effect.
Resources are given by a Modify Player effect while units with the Resource behaviour can be modified by a Modify Unit effect.
You need a Text type actor to do the visuals and maybe a Model type actor or two depending on how complex your visuals get.
