The data-only solution would be to create a huge Switch effect, with a long list of validators to check again each unit type to call a specific effect creating that unit type. It's not very elegant but it works...
Executing a Create Unit - effect on the target unit and setting the Target: Origin + - field to Target Unit and the Unit: Spawn Unit - field set to (None) should work as well.
I know, but still I think the replicant will use some new functionality or maybe like 1000 morph abilities and a switch, because just creating a new unit would have some issues like not preserving the control group etc.

So what if I had an ability where I wanted to select a target unit and make a duplicate of that unit type to fight for me?

That is interesting, actually. A "Spawn Unit" field set to None instead spawns an unit of the same type as the Target:Origin unit?
It's very unexpected, but certainly nice.

Just like launching a launch missile effect without specifying a missile unit launches the caster as a missile ;)
