I don't know how to make an aura using the data editor, but I can do MUCH more and do it MUCH faster using triggers. Even though it doesn't fit all the requirements, I will show you an example later today. :D
I'm sorry yukaboy that completly kills the point in the "data exercise" if you would like to learn however there is a great starting tutorial found here :
Isn't that just an aoe effect? I thought auras are moving with the emitting unit.
Well the way I have it setup I could attach both of theses to units as a passive ability. This didn't work for the purpose of these 2 towers in my map (am going to add a third one that makes a moving damage area around an afflicted target, if I can get it to work).
I wasn't going to post it originally, but when I saw @Cotcan: Go's post I thought I'd chuck mine up on here too. Since it runs as an aura placed on a area.
When I get home I'll change them up and place them on a unit as a passive and re-upload. Assuming that I didnt stuff up the damage one and it kills itself :P
If I'm not allowed to show how I do things in the trigger editor, then I can't participate in these because Data editing is very complicated. I'm guessing that everyone here has atleast an idea how to do things, but I can't even figure it out through tutorials. Sorry. :(
Yukaboy, The data editor can seem overwhelming, but by not attempting to learn it you are limiting yourself in your map making, if you get stuck we can help, there is a forums of people here that can help. But this is not an exercise that should touch the trigger editor at all.
As for tutorials, they are clearly layed out, just follow through them slowly even video tutorials are a great way to learn
Yeah, technicaly it shouldn't damage myself as I already have it set so that if the effect overlaps my own units it doesn't damage them, BUT I am prone to stuffing things up completly so you never know what will occur :P
I tried last excersise and was stumped by a hundred problems. I decided it wasn't worth it and quit. The data editor also seems to have been updated to lock players out of some units. So I'm no longer an expert because everyone got better, and updates said "Bye bye".
Yet we did not see one post asking for help? Nobody expects you to know how to use the data editor to its full capabilities straight away, I will admit there are areas that stump me and I still can't get my head around them, But I don't just quit, I ask for help and I continue working towards a solution.
Your last post has "I'm a quitter" written all through it, is that really the approach you take to map making? I do not expect everyone to pull out examples of their work that are of blizzad quality, because that is unrealistic of everyones skills. I want you to do your best and we will help you along the way. If you don't feel up to the exercise then you don't have to participate, but these exercies are for the people that have no clue and try and pull out a result and for the more advanced that can show exactly what the editor is capable of.
Heya, sweet auras you've all got going on. I'm having a little trouble with mine, hoping someone can help. So my aura changes unit size amongst other things. However, I can't find a way to modify the unit collision size, so everything starts overlapping. Is changing the collision size doable through the data editor?
The only way I can think of changing it at runetime would be morphing the unit into another with the larger radius, as far as I know there is no way to currently adjust the radius of a unit otherwise
You could try putting an effect of "apply force on the units", so adding a buff to units effected that reruns the apply force on the units often and pushed them away, not sure how this would work though
As arkless said they are not quite auras but they are very nice looking AoE effects, if you were able to attacth them to a unit and move when a unit moves then you have an aura
----
After I managed to kill myself with the drain buff as I knew I would (hah, told you everything doesn't work out) I managed to get it working properly, so here are the 2 auras / AOE effects I have in store for my map (so far) made as proper auras.
Very basic concepts but hey, I'm still learning :P
Blue is the slowing aura.
Green is the damaging aura.

@ yukaboy: If you have no desire to learn the data editor, thats perfectly fine with me. Many maps are done by teams anyway and not everyone must know everything of the editor.
However nevjmac is right about this being specifically a data exercise, so your trigger-based auras would indeed be misplaced ;).
You could show them off somewhere else probably.
Ahhh thanks mate, when I didn't get the embed link to go right I thought it would be a command I wasn't sure of to do it. Long day so didn't bother seeing how, just as long as I had a link for people to look at heh.
I like the look of the green aura especially. It's obvious from a player perspective, but not overly intrusive. What model did you use to create that effect?
That looks a lot like the "Challenge Shield" model or similar, the green field, which is used in the challenges to shield the units before the challenge starts.
Here is my answere to the second challenge!
The zerg run shit scare when they notice the earthquake but they will still attack you when they notice your presence, even on the shaking earth. The zergs enemies must be slayn at all costs.
The earthquake deals a huge amount of damage to nearby buildings, the closer to the center, the more dmg it deals.
Try loading your marine into the medivac to move your eathquake around without fearing those zerglings and ultralisks!
Problems: Giving orders to any unit somehow changes the "target" of all the used effects, so the earth rumbles at any given order target point. Anyone knows how to fix it?
I've done 2 simple auras. 1 deals loads of damage over time to biologicals. 2 makes the unit deal 20 less damage. (.5 total) Very simple and no actors involved. I have pictures and the map, but no video. :(

It is indeed the challenge shield, I used it for those exact reasons. That it was obvious to the player, yet not overly intrusive (unless you stacked a lot on top of eacher).

There is an easy fix to damaging yourself, I'll let you see if you can figure it out first :)

edit: attached fixed version
Just change the actor's subjects from host target to nothing. Works fine for me ;)

oh my god, how did host target get there o.o that doesn't make sense in any way
Thanks for finding that, I was looking through my effects all the time and couldnt find a thing.
