heres what i want to do, move the tank turret with the mouse ( but not move the tank) and fire with left click. is there any way i can make the turret its own unit or reference it as a unit? so i can have them operate separately?
Not yet. They demo'd this at blizzcon with an immortal, but the functionality is set to be released in patch 1.2. Or at least I don't think it's possible yet. I could be wrong, or misunderstand what you want.
We'll have to wait for patch 1.2? Guess we're all going to say "Hell, it's about time!" when it comes out, then... The mouse pointer detection is a must. There are so many projects around here that would need it...

Edit:
at around 8:00 or so is what I'm talking about.
It is possible... but not functional... there is an asset somewhere. basically its greating 100's of units a second tracing your mouse movements.
I would wait for the patch where its implemented with a single trigger
