Well, my one idea is perhaps to NOT get/make abilities that resemble those already in game? The sticky bomb sounds alot like the grenades that reapers get to throw in the campaign... it hits the ground, is delayed, then explodes. You could literally duplicate the ability then just change some Attach Points for the Target Impact or whatnot... have the grenade stick to target, you know? Same result either way.
Hmmm didn't even know reapers had this ability in the campaign as I never used them, so I was not aware of this ability. But point taken. Will still be leaving this weeks up, and will come up with a new one for next week.
Edit: I have an idea for an excercise. How about an excercise where you attempt recreating the shadow clones ability that Zeratul had in sc2 alpha? I know it exists cuz I peek around in the editor. I got close, but found I wasn't skilled enough so I gave up. It'd be neat to see if it can be done :D .
I also have some other ideas. I'll sum them up in another file and paste them here soon! :D
If you can find me some information on it, cause I didn't follow sc2 through the alpha or beta. I will have a look into it. Making a custom weapon is a great idea, as people will come up with different ways to design it.
Guys the weekly data exerice is meant to be an exercise everyone can do and come up with different outcomes and differnet looking effects. I don't want to do simple things that would have the same look for everyone as this kinda kills the point.
All your ideas will have everyone making the ability the same way, I want people to try and come up with different looking abilities, if we were all to make a barracks that trains all terran units, whilst this may be good practice in the data editor, it would be the same result for everyone.
You could also recreate some DND Spells, like in a broad general term.
Like one WDE you say "recreate a fire-based Spell from DND" and it would allow us to recreate any "fire" spell, from Fireball to Flame Arrow to Melf's Minute Meteors to Skull Trap to Burning Hands or Dragon's Breath.
Or Ice or Acid, or some kind of Necromancy spell like Wail of the Banshee or Abi-Dalzim's Horrid Wilting, or an Illusion spell like Phantasmal Killer, or any one of Bigby's Hands.
This would eliminate the "everyone make a Flame Arrow" types of WDEs where the end result is all the same, you know?
There's ALOT of spells available in DND, and it would be interesting to see how some of them might be implemented in the Data Editor.
You could make one "Buff up the mothership". Either have a requirement for it to be extremely awesome (then merge all entries and have the MS face off, lol jk) or actually balanced for melee play (not perfectly balanced, but nothing like 1 MS can beat a whole friggin army (unless that army cant shoot air of course))
I think you shouldn't have so many restrictions, personally. The fun part of the WTE is all the different things that come out from 1 idea/theme. When you start limiting what you can do it becomes more of a "Who can do the same thing that everyone else is gonna do but more convenient"
For example instead of:
This ability can only be cast on mechanical units, meaning it cannot be targetted on biological units.
It will have an area of effect explosion, which can hurt any units in the surrounding area including the caster.
This Grenade can be launchable, so you can give it a 5 yard cast range.
It must have a delay before exploding and causing damage.
You could just explain what a sticky bomb is and then let the users become creative with the idea. That's just my point of view though.
Yes I slightly screwed up this week in everyones opinion, and now looking back, a better idea could have been chosen. I will definetly be removing the amount of restrictions and being more broader in my selections from now.
First week mistakes were made, next week I will put some more thought into it heh
