I've been looking through the simple data editor guides to actually learn how to use something other than the terrain editor.
After successfully creating a simple one-shot beam weapon from ProzaicMuse's tutorial, I decided to try a continuous beam, like the Sentry.
This is an absolute nightmare. The attacking unit will play the first few frames of its attack animation, but the game freezes before anything else happens.
After spending a total of three hours checking the forums (I know that the same beam tutorial describes how to make a continuous beam on the third page, which didn't work), checking my edited fields, and comparing the new 'Fusion Beam' weapon with Sentry, Laser Drill, and Void Ray weapons, I cannot for the life of me figure out what is wrong with it.
I have also tried starting over on another computer (this time a mac), and the same freeze happens.
At first I tried using Mohandar's Missile as art (which I know works using Attack Variation animations), but then I decided to try and make everything exactly the same to a sentry. It still crashed.
I still think the best solution is starting over again, though I would really like to know what is going on.
What could potentially cause a simple, continuous beam to freeze the game?
If possible, could somebody also post a step by step method of making a simple beam?
There is no complete tutorial on this kind of weapon, and I think that seeing the right way to do it will be easier than pinpointing this (infuriating) error.
Thanks
NOTE: unchecking the 'persist until destroyed' option (or something along those lines) of the persistent would NOT freeze the game, but it would not have any animation or effect whatsoever. It would only make the attacker turn and play the attack animation.
What kind of freeze is it? Does the game just stop responding, or does it display an error message?
Both would mean different things. Freezes usually come from a break in the actual editor code, or some kind of infinite loop that has gone unchecked. It is possible that you have discovered a bug in Blizzard's code. The editor is supposed to catch all these infinite loops and destroy them, but, as you probably know, the editor has a tone of leaks. If you found an area that the editor fails to garbage collect, that is probably what is happening. The point is that a simple beam should not freeze the editor. A corrupt file is a possibility, because the same data would have been used to run the file on the mac computer. Perhaps starting over is your only option. If it is an error message, copy and paste it into the forum so we can see it.
(FYI one of my maps actually experienced this. When I save, the map actually saves to 2 locations. I had to delete the corrupt file and start from the old one. This is possibly what you are going to have to do)
I actually had two different saved files, one on my windows and another on my mac. I tried different methods to fix it, so it has probably gone a bit further astray. I'll just upload the first (probably less accurate one) for now.
The battlecruiser unit works fine, and I could make it again if I have to. The void ray has the weapon in question, 'Fusion Beam'.
The freeze is the game not responding. It does not crash or create a message.
I do have an older version somewhere, so I can use that too.
It looks to me like you are experiencing the same bug I was... It crashed for me and I am on a Windows PC. I would just load it from a previous point, I don't think there was anything wrong with your weapon.
Note I didn't actually check, I just ran the game to see if it crashed the same way mine did when I experienced the bug. Still don't know what caused it, but I think somehow the file got corrupted. Your map literally responded in the exact same way. I loaded it, and then it just froze.
Really? That's odd.
Mine only freezes when I try to fire the beam. Everything else works.
Hopefully the older version works, because when I sent it to my mac and tried to create a beam, the same thing happened.
Thanks.

Welcome to sc2mapster :D
Mind posting the map? (Unless there a reason it would crash that I don't know about, that should help us figure it out)

Great to be back and part of the community again!
Thanks for the welcome :)
