I'm trying to make an aura that you can turn on and off. I have it set to search the area but I don't know how to connect the behavior to the search area. I also don't completely understand how to make it toggle on and off.
The aura will damage the caster 2 health each second and will slow down and damage enemy units each second. I got those two pretty much done I just don't know how to tell it to use search area for the enemy part and how to toggle.
You have to create an ability of type behaviour. There, you set the flag "Toggle" to true and select behaviour A. Create two buttons (on and of) and add the to the "Command" field and teh command card of your unit. Behaviour A has a periodic effect that is of type "Search Area" that calles another effect of type "Apply Behaviour". The letter applies behaviour B which is the actual buff. Make behaviour B last for one second and behaviour A apply it every one second and you are done.
It doesn't seem to be applying the behavior to the enemy units. But it does work on my unit. So it's taking the 2 health away from me but no health or attack speed, afaik, from the enemy.
I seem to found the problem, sort of. It seems like in the abilities tab that only the top behavior that is on the list will get applied. It won't use two behaviors. I have one set up for the enemy and one for the caster. Is there a way to get this into one behavior?
Its hard to tell, but it sounds like you are directly applying the behavior from the toggle ability, when you should be applying an aura behavior with a periodic set effect with two search effects (one for enemies, one for allies) which apply the effect that applies the wanted behavior (with a duration slightly longer than the periodic duration of the aura behavior)
Have your Behavior ability apply the buff behavior with Effect - Effect - Periodic effect giving a Set effect that uses an Apply Behavior effect to apply your caster buff with Unit - Unit - Value set to the caster. The other effect in the set effect is a Search Area effect that has the filters target enemy units and the Search - Areas - Effect field set to an apply behavior effect for the target buff.
On the buff front just have it give negative hp regen for the caster and do the same for the target buff + change attack speed/movement speed/time scale.
I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Everything seems like it's set up right. But now it won't even do one of the effects. How can this one stupid ability be so much trouble. It should be easy, should it?

The multiple behaviors in the "Ability (Behavior)" type is for leveling abilities. Row 1 = Level 1, Row 2 = Level 2, and so on.
Here's a quick idea of how I would set this up:
Ability (Behavior)
Behavior: Aura (Caster)
Behavior (Buff) - Aura (Caster)
Periodic Effects - Aura (Set)
Periodic Duration 0.25
Behavior (Buff) - Aura (Target)
//Your debuff for nearby enemies here
Duration: 0.3
Effect (Set) - Aura (Set)
Effects: Aura (Apply Aura)
Effects: Aura (Damage Caster)
Effects: Aura (Damage Aura)
Effect (Apply Behavior - Aura (Apply Aura)
Behavior: Aura (Target)
Effect (Damage) - Aura (Damage Caster)
Damage: 2 * 0.25 (Because the periodic duration is 0.25 - four times a second)
Effect (Damage) - Aura (Damage Aura)
Damage: 1 (or whatever)

Post the map, or a map with all of the stuff that you did for this ability.
Edit: I have an idea that may help. Copy the ghost cloak ability, and replace the default cloak behavior with the motherships cloak aoe behavior.
