Hmmmm. This doesn't look possible in the CE. Because the way I'm seeing it is that the marine's actor validates whether the shield is upgraded for and if not it plays the animation cover endlessly. Somehow looping that animation overtop of the other animations seems to remove the shield. I'm not enough of a model expert to tell you how that type of animation works.
Ok so I looked into this and it turns out you can play 2 simultaneous animation layers. So what you need to do is add the marine, then add a second animation layer and have the second animation layer (or the first doesn't matter) endlessly play cover or for however long you want the shield removed.
Anyone know how to alter the model in the CE?

You can also use double animations to give SM characters facial movements.
