Does anyone know how to replicate the sound that Marines have when you click on them and they talk? I'm going to be using some external vocals I found, but I want it to have that radio clicking sound that Marines have when they speak.
I managed to make it somewhat decent by cutting the start and end of some of their transmissions and pasting that to the start and end of the external vocals in Audacity, messing around with fading to make it sound more natural. I also added some noise (brown noise) in Audacity and messed around with the bass and treble for that. The static in the background sounds somewhat okay, but it's still audibly much different than the clicking Marines make when they talk.
Does anyone know how to generate that clicking static that marines use when they talk?
I'm in no hurry. I decided to put this off as a finishing touch after I've done all the other things for the map I'm working on. I figured it would be efficient to pose the question here and see what comes up in the meantime.
EDIT: As a hint and a teaser for what I'm working on, here's the audio clips I've come up with so far. :D
Other than layering these with your voice recordings, a subtle distortion applied to all the layers might help tie everything together. I'm not sure if Audacity comes with any distortion effect (last time I used it it didn't), but this free plugin should do the trick: http://free-loops.com/vst-plugin-39.html
Drag it into Audacity's plugins folder and you should see it in the effects tab under "Atomsplitter Audio: Distroyr". I would suggest using the overdrive for that radio like effect.
Ooh, those are excellent. Particularly the clicks/background static and that plugin. I can use the clips I cut already for start and end. It was the background static that I couldn't get right.
Ooh, thank you. The static_sweeten 04, 05, and 06 files really sound a lot like the Terran radio clicking. And that spaceman plugin looks (according to a youtube video I watched for it) really useful too. I'm getting so much helpful stuff from you guys. Thank you!
I wonder if there's a way to generate a continued stream of that kind of clicky sound without it sounding like it's obviously a sample being repeated. Maybe some cut/copy/paste layering and fading trickery.
Recording your marine's sounds is quite simple. Getting the sound just right is rather hard though. I bet they used Speakerphone to produce the radio chatter. This can be done with tools like Guitar Rig, or Hardcore for FL Studio. That's at least how I would create the radio noise. As for random beeps like cops calling each other, a sample & hold LFO could do that trick.
Those who uses Reason there are a decent set of Rack Extensions to use I'd recommend Kuassa's guitar amps. As I said I don't know how to do these sounds though, so you better be ready to put in several tens of hours to get the sound the way you want it to be.
So is there any freeware amp plugins I can recommend? Not really. It's all about spending the time to actually getting the sound right that counts. Since the plugins are freeware they often lack in just that department. As I said in another topic: You get what you pay for.

There are a couple of ok walkie-talkie recordings on Freesound that you might find useful.
http://www.freesound.org/people/IneQuation/sounds/27878/ (static for start/end of transmission) http://www.freesound.org/people/crcavol/sounds/154654/ (clicks and background static)

Let me know if this helps.

These will help a lot, thank you!
It's probably a commercial sample somewhere, then the entire thing could be run over with Spaceman (directx/VST plugin).
Some of these sounds might be useful to you. I am too lazy to dig through the cds, these are from dow1 or dow2 iirc.

layering in paint is coolisimo.. i never thought there could be something "deeper" than that ..
then i met layering sounds : and thought: .. just how crazy .. how deep can you want to go ? :-)
ps: i got back to visuals .. just cause it is too deep (for me ..hahahahhahahahahhahahaha) )
tldr: just to say sound mixing is awe some
