Or it could simply be a ring glow, or something not as obvious so that the reaver's head crystals will be emphasized.

That's certainly better than that eyecancer reaver model made of sentry's, and it seems to fit in.
Personally I like the model that was made for SC2 rather than the PR one better (even though it's texture sucks), this one is defiantly usable now well done!.

This texture photoshop file, it doesn't need to have all these layers right? Or must we create all textures in such a structure? I'd like to merge some layers down.

Above is the current progress of the textures. I will do same for any model, if there was something like what DevRR0 provided. UV unwrapped of the sort, and a preliminary texture. Since I have no idea currently to make them myself and test them being applied in 3dsmax.

it is kind of good when you have different details on a different levels, coz after you did diffusion map you may need also make a normal map and a specular map, or maybe make some changes

i don't know how this is going to look on the model though, so, I'll wait until further notice.

that defiler looks 100x better than the model i pulled from the released version i have. not sure how to get ahold of that.

i created normal and specular maps
i also increased the poly count of the fins of the reaver and moved the texture abit to make it abit better (the one you were talking about)
