I would take a look at WH 40K or WildStar Online for sci fi melee weapons, then beef them up with the Blizzard art style touch
Just an idea.

I did a little paint over if you don't mind, cause I really like the dagger idea, just to let you know what I had in mind.
Thanks, yeah I was looking at WH40k for come concept ideas. Since these sets of weapons are specifically Terran Themed, trying to stay true to their design. Thats why I steered clear of the "glass" energy blades and techno pieces, I'm going to save those for protoss designs.
I asked my roommate for critique and he gave a similar response about beefing and bulking up the weapons. He also came up with the idea of trying to incorporate the Terran's "transform" mechanic (similar to siege tanks, vikings, hellbats, etc.) so maybe having like a War Hammer that changes into a Rocket Launcher or something.
I like the adjustments that you made, definitely feels like a Sci-Fi weapon, somewhat reminiscent of Phantasy Star Online. I could see something like that in WildStar, I love their art style. In fact i recently applied for a job at Carbine so if I'm lucky I might actually get to work on the game. :)
I am largely inactive, but I am still around. Feel free to poke me if you need some help, just be warned that I only really come back if I need help and/or if I'm posting a new map/library.
I noticed that the Ghost has a lot of possible animations, although you would probably need to change his texture, head and some other stuff to be able to use with attachments.
Or maybe use a base model from WoW and use its animations ?
Maybe I'll check later this week, since I have an evening meeting today...
Hey guys, been thinking a lot on doing a Regular...
In other words... a simple model that fits in the SC2 world, but one that has some basic animations, so that it can be altered by adding weapons, armor, etc...
So I used the head of the colonist as a reference, but really hated the way it was textured, so I created my own Regular Head.
From now on I will call him The Regular. Any advice and so on is more than welcome. Head is textured using Blizzards Colonist Main Male Diffuse texture.
I also used multiple textures provided from the game, just to have a feeling how it looks.
At the end I would like to post the max file so everyone can take a shot at it and change it as they like.
So here are the first Wip's:
The one on the left is Blizzards, on the right is mine.
@kinkycactus: nice concept, not sci fi enough imo

@ZombieZasz: Go
I rather like those. They definitely fit with Terran. If you have ideas for ranged weapon I'd be cool with those too.
@kinkycactus,
yeah these look a lot better to me :) I really "dig" the hand axe now
and good luck with your application @Carbine, I saw these guys at Gamescom this year, awesome!

I would like to request, if I may.
Appreciate it if someone actually makes either! :)
Isn't the regular Civilian not good for this ?

Since the session is postponed, I'll just create a few simple tutorials covering the modelling needs people mentioned.
@TaylorMouse: Go
They lack any decent attacks and their throw animation looks terrible on the spectre prisoners.

Indeed I think of the civilian model got a few ranged and melee attacks it would be used far more often.

Here is another version, unwrap is different but the mesh is the same, texture is from higher poly models, one of the mercenaries I think.
Which one do you prefer
Both sets of WIPS are taken only with diffuse mapping

Give them more of a slight smile, think mona lisa. You gave them all a more stern expression which may not be better.

They have a smile :p
No, just kidding... I'll have to test that...usually a smile, a smile on a head like this is too... forced imo.

Better than a case of the sulks like they seem to have.

Oh, ok :)
Anyways, the meaning of doing this "regular" guy is that people who want to take a shot at modeling, adjusting, etc can do so.
You can download the 3DS File and use it freely, adjust and whatever, make him less sulky ;)
I'll upload a couple of tutorials to get this guy ready
