It can't be simulated by using actors, the actors can only give you a middle-quality result, if the actor can do all works—why Blizzard made their own placement models.
But you do can make additional materials in sc2 and replace the old ones to get a better simulate result.
When WoL was first released many features now found in the editor did not exist like glazes. Blizzard also does not have to worry about file size caused by imported models.

The actor can not recreate the same quality result, so it's a sub-optimal solution for a mod, if you want to support best effect, the models are still needed. If someone is working on a mod that contains new buildings or new races, this tutorial could be helpful.
The file size is very small for placement models, most of the textures are came from unit/building's textures, and you can use 256x256 size to save your space—Blizzard did that too, a geometry with few animations won't cost much space too.
A skilled artist can do that in minutes, I have spent over 18 minutes for 3 different races, I can finish each one in 60 seconds if it's not in a tutorial.
Anyway, it's an optional solution, if you want your map as cool as blizzard's, choose model, or you can use actor to finish it faster and easier.
I will upload one tutorial per day for a month (if there are enough requests.) Today's tutorial is about the "carpet bombing effect", Zolden may like it since it contains a real fuze inside a particle.
I'd like to ask for request of moving tank treads and explode physics effect (like exploding tank and his parts are threw away)
hm.. ain't the 'exploding tank' thingamajig just a death model? oO
and what i know from warcraft modding, tank threads there are just moving textures, so maybe it's kinda similar with a 'warp in' tutorial?

I will make a new tutorial about the 3 race building placement model, sorry I misunderstood your request as unit placement (like protoss warpin unit)
It was really very useful Delphinium!
Whatever you do, wholeheartedly, moment by heartfelt moment, becomes a tool for the expression of your very soul.
i wonder what is next :)

Delphium, make tutorial how to mak falling ammo like tychus with chaingun + your construct :D I want to know it.

Hi, I have finished the "placement model" tutorial, you can find it on youtube.
And that needs additional models when it can be simulated using actors?

I think DrSuperEvil means the 20-80 rule. Setting a an actor up for it is like spending 20% time to have 80% result, which is a good alternative.
Though, I'd prefer actors to be able to affect UV offsets of the textures for additional animation.

Can you make tutorial how to create bouncing ammo from weapon? Like tychus with chaingun or your crawler :d
Haha I figured out how Blizz made those as well through a painstaking trial and error process for my campaign. Your result looks great!
And yes more tutorials. :P

Looks good. Is each of those bombs a single projectile?

+ I'm curious how to make nice water as in heroes of the storm sky temple that beutiful water effect + moving :o
Is possible to use flip book of diffuse?
Hi, I was messed up by my personal website these days.
It's hard to link to wordpress.com from China, so every modification caused tons of time to wait.
the tank treads are UV offset animations, but I need a few more days before free so that I can make a tutorial.
there is an example about water here, it's simple so a max file will be enough to share the idea.
Anyway, welcome to my new website, Most of those stuffs are the same in this thread, but it's better on classification and review.
