I always loved the design of Diablo from Diablo 2. For me, its the quintessential essence of the design of the Diablo franchise. Just look at this badass mofo:
I always wanted to have a proper 3D model of that guy. As such, Im currently working on and off on creating a Diablo 2 Diablo (geez) model for Starcraft 2. The model is designed, detailed and proportioned as a third person perspective model, not RTS perspective and as such would work best in a third person environment.
This model is not yet finished and currently a work in progress.
Heres my current progress:
And with some more neutral lighting:
The head is completely custom with meshes and textures created by me.
The horns, aswell as the rest of the body as seen in the pictures is currently still a placeholder slapped together in 10 minutes (the colors arent even matched correctly with the head yet), but just like in the pictures the body will be based on this Heroes of the Storm Diablo model, although I will make many modifications to it, both to the mesh and textures to properly get the feel of the Diablo 2 design across (some of the modifications you can already see in the pictures):
What matters to me is not just to replicate the actual 3D model used for the Diablo 2 sprite, but to capture HOW the players see the sprite and to capture the impression that the Diablo 2 sprite has.
As such, the model will differ from the original 3D model in certain ways to better get across what players actually see when looking at the sprite. My main references are the sprite itself aswell as this little artwork of Diablos head from the back of the Diablo 2 box:
However, actual images of the Diablo 2 3D model can also be helpfull to further identify details and nuances in the design:
This is a work in progress, feedback and opinions are appreciated.
Surprisingly enough, theres quite alot of nuance to the Diablo 2 design and the smaller details really help make it what it is. So if you have any suggestions, shoot. Just keep in mind that this is just a little fun side project of mine, so I wont necessarily bring my A game or go the extra mile.
Did you know, when Blizzcon announced the necromancer for Diablo III, they also announced a fully playable Diablo I remake!
For some awesome Diablo content (Fan made) check out this guys work, Diablo by Sandvik
So, some comments, the chin is too tiny, in the neutral lighting there are lots of details that are gone, so depending on the game engine you want to use, plz verify that it turns out great. The chest looks ok, apart from the missing glow ( like the one from Heroes of the Storm)

All those screenshots are from within the SC2 editor. Ofc every model looks better if you take the time to set up some good lighting for your maps.
Can you specify what you mean with the chin beein too tiny? I did leave out the chin spike intentionally because I felt like its not a big part of the silhouette of Diablos head in Diablo 2 (for example, its barely visible in the artwork of the head on the back of the Diablo 2 box and also barely visible in alot of frames in the sprite).
I wont include any glow on the body of this model because the Diablo 2 design didnt have any body glow.
but his face is kinda... lizardlike? with all the teeth on display he reminds me of this guy
As for the more lizard/wolf like head, yeah, that was the point, seeing how Diablos head is alot more lizard like in Diablo 2, as you can clearly see in the references I used. This is a feature of the Diablo 2 design that I really like and has never been used in any of the other designs or models again, so I made sure to include it in my one.
And yeah, both Horny from Dungeon Keeper aswell as Diablo in 2 seemed to be very proud of their teeth. Tho I might have gone abit overboard with it, maybe I´ll experiment around with toning the teeth down just a touch.
Dude are your seriously using an almost 5 years old model from 2012
(1:51 minute) when they updated Diablo model on the end of May 2014 ( 1,5 years ago) ?? The new model is so much better, just look at this video
Just admire this badassness, the whole model is better, new face, new textures, new animation, new claws, new mount Diablo 2 style, new pose, new face animations... This model is ages ahead of the old one, it's so good that your new model imho isn't even needed, take this picture for example
Hands down the best model in the game at the moment

I disagree wholeheartedly. While maybe superior in polycount, the new Heroes of the Storm model is an absolute insult to Diablo and it looks nothing like Diablo should look like. Its fat, ugly and takes all the worst aspects of Diablos designs over the years while taking none of the best. His face is a fuckin joke. The body texture looks like zerg, not like Diablo.
Also, and most importantly for this project, it looks nothing like the Diablo 2 design of Diablo, and my model is committed to creating a high quality model that mimics the Diablo 2 sprite as much as possible.
Just look at this awesome visage of a face and then look back at the ugly troll-like face of the new HOTS model. Atleast the old model SOMEWHAT tried to capture this:
This is what Im trying to recreate, not just another "interpretation" of Diablo.
This is also the reason why I choose the older model as a base for the body. The older models body is much closer in design to the Diablo 2 design (they obviously tried to match the two designs in certain aspects), meaning it serves this purpose much better than the newer model.
My disdain for the new HOTS model is actually one of the reasons I started working on this model in the first place.
You know, it's pretty amazing. The diablo I remembered was demon diablo which is closer to what blizz has now. But I was also influenced by other games that had these bulky tough demons (like disciples series), so I never really paid much attention. But looking at the original BlizzNorth diablo, I'm starting to remember that D1 had stuff like burning upside down crosses and child sacrifices. Their diablo is more seprent like, more in touch with it's pagan roots. And it's bloody magnificent.
I prefer the ""serious"" expressions of the new one, the old one didn't even have facial animations... I still prefer the new one, yeah is a bit "Chubby" but I still love it, he is so imposing on the battlefield, his chest is not unnaturally erected but a bit lowered by the weight of his own body / spykes, his walk animation/pose is less edgy and more natural/realistic for me... It can be improved but i am still in love with... Anyway i know what you are trying to do, maybe you could use the light effects of the new one, good luck with it btw
Suggestion, put a screenshot of the model with a sort of in-Game camera angle
Question for the other mapsters, what do you think of the new Diablo models model ? Do you like/hate it?
I really like his face, really remember my old times in Diablo II. The sarcastic face <3
The only thing I dislike is the soulstone and the chest, the soulstone isn't looking natural as it should (at least look more like a 'stone' instead of a 'jelly'), and the chest is a bit bigger then it should be.
The old Diablo is more of a dragon/serpentine/reptillian. I like it. The new ones seems like it comes from an artist's racism. I'm not gonna say it, but all these Big-bad shapes remind me of something.
It's just how I feel about the new diablo face.

But the most important thing, it will be public?
Yeah, its true, the soulstone could use some more work. I will see what I can do to make it look better.
Good catch on the chest - I will probably make it smaller to make it more in line with the Diablo 2 design.
As for if it will be public, Im not sure what I will do with it yet when its finished. If I dont decide to do anything with it myself, I will most likely make it available on request for people that work on a strong project that I feel like could really utilize and benefit from the model.

Dafuq? Just saying, if you see racist shit in stuff that isnt race related at all, maybe you should begin to question your own inner stance on the topic.
I am no expert on Diablo by any means but I think your model looks great so far.
The only thing I see to critique on is the tail. It could be just the captured pose, but it seems a tad too stiff.

I think it looks great man. I'm a sucker for nostalgia. I think the HoTS one is fine since it's "supposed" to be cartoony but I can appreciate a more classic one any day.
I'm not really sure why a lot of people are against your work here. If the man wants a different looking Diablo let him have it! Hell I'm remaking all of the old SC1 units, some people would call that a waste too.
Dafuq? Just saying, if you see racist shit in stuff that isnt race related at all, maybe you should begin to question your own inner stance on the topic.
Glad you like the old-styled face though.
I do have an issue with it, tbh, from the receiving end. But it's not my point. It's completely racist to have to base diablo off of Draenor Orcs.
Orcs have always been seen as evil, and it shows. Why can't demons be different, and actually be reptilian? Mr. Icke would agree.
Sorry for the derail. I do love the old design. It's less, 'orcy' or terrestrial, or whatever you call it. Its mouth shape is closer to the goat head in those pentagrams.
I should get back to minding my own business now. Apologies, again.
I mainly worked on the little shoulder horns right above the shoulder, making the form basically exactly like they were in Diablo 2 (on the HOTS model they were basically just straight horns, as you can see in the first post) aswell as adjusted the position of them, making them closer to the neck, as they can be seen very well in this reference:
I agree only with the loss of the goat/bull face, replaced with a sort of "generic brute" face, it's inferior but still more expressive imho
I do agree that the HOTS Diablo model looks pretty powerfull and imposing on the battlefield, though I think it does so despite its shortcomings. When not in motion, I think he looks ridiculous even ingame.

Seeing how its a model made for maps with a third person perspective in mind, these screens are in a sort of in-Game camera angle.
