texturing is definitly my favorite part of modeling, its a shame most people play on low settings and don't get to apreciate all the work that goes into it :(
I like to render out a high-poly and low-poly AO pass and multiply them together, you get all the small details and some nice crisp edges on the harder angles. Color tweaking can always be a little tricky, I find I usally go overkill on adjustment layers x_x
I recently started playing around with different styles of colored specular maps and got some pretty decent results:
Diffuse with Sat and vibrance enchancement vs white
I haven't released any of them publicly other than the Footman.
I'm hoping for the Map Marketplace to sell models (and model packs) as mods. It's difficult to release models, because as it stands, every model in an SC2 map is open source. Anyone can go into a map or mod and extract them for their own use. I am not against public use, but I have no control over when, where and how they will be used and whether or not I am even credited. Even now, there are maps out there using leaked models I created and not officially released. There isn't any system in place that limits or controls this. I'm hoping that Blizzard will address this when the Marketplace hits.
A couple things, Its up to you whether or not to actually ever release anything. But keep in mind
From a buisness standpoint I HIGHLY doubt that blizzard would allow ANY models to be sold that are based off copyrighted material.
Also They have never once said they they were going to include model sales lol.
im just saying If it were me and all I was interested in was money, I would just go try to create something new, Because Chances are, even if they are based on blizz work, they wont be allowed to sell.
Modelling and modding for me is first and foremost a hobby. My motivation for recreating Warcraft models is because I'm a huge fan of the series, and I personally want to see these classic units made and looking like the concepts they were based on. Blizzard is doing exactly what I want to see with Blizzard Allstars.
When it comes to releasing models, it's a very fickle subject because Blizzard is so quiet about their plans. There simply isn't enough information to make any decisions. What if they improve map security and locking? What if they add a premium account system? What if they deal with microtransactions? No one knows what will happen. That's why I'm hesitant to simply release models out into the public if there is still potential there to use them as premium content. Keep in mind, I'm not talking about Warcraft models, but models in general.
As for the Warcraft models, I have plans on making a map, hopefully sometime once HOTS is released. A lot of my decisions to release models will directly be affected on what I plan to do with this map. Much of its promotion is centered around custom models. Even if the models are released publicly, people can still buy the map to support the creator. Of course, all of this rides on what Blizzard intends to do with the Marketplace.
:P alright, Well if you ever do decide to release them on a limited basis hit me up, I could really use some for Evolution Frenzy heros, I would lock this map and wouldnt give them out, Also I am Slowly working on a wc2 mod that could use them too. So if you do decide hit me up.
I refuse to download your models without your prior consent so even if they are floating around I wont do it :P
Of course I would be more the happy to include you on the loading screen. so if you change your mind hit me up
I totally get where you are coming from. I released a ton of stuff I would have rather kept for my own project, now when people see them in it they'll be like "oh yeah it's cool but it's not new". Not to mention when you put so much work into something knowing that later on (If Blizz stops dragging their feet) you could get some of that time paid back to you.
However there is also the fan factor. This is where I caved and released almost everything I made. I say you just gotta be strong with the stuff you plan on using for projects and such, otherwise it drastically loses value. Plus you seem to have some really high quality stuff that is definitely worth something you deserve a little compensation for it.
don't you think that simple white specular map looks usually better then any colored one?
well..... yes and no....
white spec maps are good for highlighting geometry and normal maps, but they don't really portray what the object is made of.
for example, zerg spec maps use primarily blue maps, that give them a "slimy" look, and the protoss have spec maps that are tweaked versions
of the diffuse maps, and make the golds and blues really vibrant and metallic.
Got a lot done in the past few months, but still have a ton left. Here's a couple editor screenies of the units in game so far. I went back and remodelled a few older units I worked on.
OMg these models are better and better. I love the wc2 death knight, my favorite unit. I'm working on the wc2 remake at the moment it gave me strength.
It's an elite Horde unit, the Blackrock Champion. Think of them as Doomhammer's elite fighters, a counterpart for the Knights of the Silver Hand. The design is loosely based on the Horde PVP set from Vanilla. I've recently went back and touched up the model, along with the archer to bring the designs a little bit closer to the style in Blizzard Allstars.
Just finished up a new model, the Mage from Warcraft 2. I'll be adding some polish to the textures sometime in the future, but for now this guy is pretty much ready and working.
Man this stuff brings me back. The only time I ever engaged in the Warcraft series was when Warcraft 2 came out on playstation but it was one of my favorite games and I loved all of the units. It's so awesome to see them with such good quality. Keep it up man I love it!

I can understand why when I look at your models.
btw, don't you think that simple white specular map looks usually better then any colored one?
This sentence makes me feel right about my intention to pay more attention to texturing :)

Who is this heavy armored orc? Is it your own design or what?

The black areas are for team color
so how much do you charge per model? :P

For Doomhammer!! :)
