I've been working my brains out to find the programs which are working best for using them to create SC2 models.
Actually I am in an deadend right now. I figured out that 3ds Max is at least the programm of choice when it comes to exporting
the models into .m3 format, but I haven't been able to find a single hint on which version would be best to use yet.

How I heard Maya is simpler to use for Human like characters, when max is better for mechanical characters. Dunno if this is true. few people told me so.
well, my infos are that maya is used mainly for animating in sc2, though i have no direct contact to blizz, so i cant give u a 100% heads up on this...
also using a certain software is not the decision of the modeler, but the dev team!
think this:
u need to geta license for the program
you need to have a workflow (which means compatibility between different computers and artists and so on)
u need to keep a certain style
also for tutorials there are hundreds of tutorial sites out there, just google tutorial and 3dsmax...
tutorialized.com
tutorialhero.com
just to state two that came into my mind (i had a big list, but lost it while formatting 2 days ago, i'm sry -.-')
@tiger: that could be true! though i only know max :P but for me personally i like max for modeling organic stuff, too, because u can make an exact edgeloop and then sculpt it in the end!
Its up to the person behind the software honestly. the max guys will say max is better, the maya guys will say maya. its just about knowing where the tools are in the specific program and how to use them.
also just as xXmorpheusXx said, in a company like blizzard the pipeline dictates what program the artists will use, not personal opinion haha

Hello everyone!
I've been working my brains out to find the programs which are working best for using them to create SC2 models. Actually I am in an deadend right now. So far,
Soziopat
2009 and upwards, maybe some down, too but 9 and upwards should definatly work, there wherent any big changes in the scripting language!
also that is not right! blizz used maya, too so maybe there's gonna be a plugin for maya, too? (we'll see when they release it)
@xXm0RpH3usXx: Go
no plugin that ive been able to find, so if anyone gets wind of one id apreciate them sharing =)
personally i despise max, and love maya, so go maya! (and photoshop)
maya is used in diablo3, but not in Sc2. (don't ask me why they took such decision)
After almost a week I've been able to work myself into 3Ds Max 2011 now. Only things I still struggling with are:
- editing an "modifiable Mesh" object (all my tools within Max arn't willing to lay a single finger on those objects)
- Using the multitexture correctly on an edit. Mesh
Could need someone to explain me how to solve these problems or someone to point me into the correct direction.

scroll down the the max forum and have at er, theres usually a tutorial thread stickied right at the top
Probably because it was the preference of the modelers.
