so iv been teaching my self how to use 3ds max, and started exporting Dawn of war 2 models into it to see if i can import them in to sc2.
and let me tell you, that was a bitch at first, but im pretty sure i have a good hang of it now. i still got some stuff to learn with small technical things like if i wanted to add attachment points, partical effects and stuff like that, but bottom line is models work in game and animations to, so thats a good start. lol
so heres the thing, to me the textures didn't turn out like i wanted them, as they dont look as good as they do in there respective game. but im sure thats because these are the base textures with out dow2 team color textures added ontop, since the two games handle those textures differently. anyways what im looking for is some one skilled in textures to give me a hand here add some team colors and generally make the units look more badass, since i have no skills in that area, and so i can concentrate my efforts in into bringing in the rest of the units in to sc2.
lol no kick starter, these are literally just ported over from the dawn of war 2 game. im just the middle man in 3ds max, the only thing i need is some one to work on the textures for me.
also i would upload the units here for everyone to use, but im new to this site and im sure that would be breaking some site rules since there assets from another game.
please inform me if im wrong on that tho
Never been a fan of Warhammer, but i would gladly play this with all the models imported, i know that there are some remakes of warhammer on the arcade, but with the original models my immersion would be improved a lot
Sadly im only currently doing dow2 models. And sisters of battle are dow 40k soul storm models if thats what you where hinting at with your dawn of war units link lol. but maybe once i go through the full dow2 roster ill circle back and figure how to do dow 40k
also im not sure if zenyatta is a good example since its a blizzard owned character, but your right it is from another game. so ya maybe ill upload them once i get the texture work done.
I in due time worked with tried to pull out models from DoW 1, for the subsequent conversion by WC3. With the conversion turned out not very good, but I still have some operating time in 3DS. I do not know how much it can help, but I can give them to you if needed.
These textures are fucked up...the diffuse is straight up grey which is why they look like that in game. The alpha channel for it is also fucked up which is why the team colors are in random spots. No one could get it to replicate what they look like in DoW 2 with the texture you have provided.
The specular, normal, and emissives will work just fine though.
Although I'm a huge fan of WH40K and WH etc... I don't think Blizzard will allow you to use conversions.
It is against there Arcade regulation.
So for personal use and study, there should not be a problem, but getting the models from one game (not Blizzards) into SC2, that will cause some legal issue, not on Blizzard or Games Workshop but on you ( @deadlytrips)
Btw, why is his name in red ? Is he banned ? ( deadlytrips I mean )
so if i was to fix the alpha in the diffuse textures would that work?. also the diffuse is gray on all textures in down of war, in any place you can change the color ingame, in the army painter or what ever its called. dow actually uses another texture on top of the diffuse textures to change the colors in game, that are painted red and blue in color changing spots. ill show an example with original file names. and sorry im new to this and how textures work so i didnt know i had do anything to the alpha maps also that would probably be a step i skipped in 3ds max when i was applying the textures right?
you mean legal actions on me for using a 3d program for saving them in a format that starcraft can use? or uploading them so mapmakers can use them for there own personal content. or if i was to personally upload them to the arcade because i dont plan on uploading anything to battle net also i sate they are not for battle net use or content one my page
Yeah, I saw that afterwards, on the legal stuff, since you are not the one using them on the Arcade, Blizzard will have no issues, on the other hand, you might get a legal warning from Games Workshop, that you are freely distributed there art.
Just make sure you can get your stuff deleted when that happens.
I usually add "for study purposes only" :p

On this topic, the blue channel on the right image, does not look to be used as a "dye". Therefor it is possible that they use it as a specular map or ambient occlusion map, or gloss map, you need to verify that.
Now, the png on the left does not seem to have a alpha layer (or it is being converted when you loaded it onto this site) so you will only need to use the RGB setting in the SC2 Standard Material in Max
Are there any other textures used than those two, because if there is a normal map, it needs to be saved as a SC2 normal map, not as a "regular" normal map.
Can you upload the files for that model in their original state ( dds, png,..) in a zip file please, so I can take a look
ok so we will use my hormagaunt as an example, this is how i have it set up in 3ds max.
and also these are the original texture files exported from the game its self not the ones 3ds max made for me.
and lastly in the statecraft 2 art tools plugin i checked make dds files when i was done and uploaded those along with my model. should i just of used the originals?
I downloaded one of your models and got this as a result after fixing the textures
But seeing the textures above, you will need some painting program to fix the textures, SC2Standard does not support all of these textures.
EDIT:
So ou probably need to merge the diffuse with the ambient occlusion map and add the red channel of the _tem map in the alpha layer of the diffuse map
The dust layer, no idea, probably because it is blended with the diffuse map in game.
The Spec map, that is an interesting one, it contains additional hilights and a spec map in the alpha channel
You also need tocopy the red channel of the normal map to the alpha layer and invert the green layer, make the red layer white and the blue layer black. This way, the engine can interprete it correctly

Looks great, considering different game and lore.
Always been a fan of dow series, with imo soul storms being the best.
Been asking for dow import at assets and model request since forever now.
Let me know if you planning a kick starter. I am willing to invest.

If I remember correctly someone already import a space marine builder over and a zealot with dow theme.
And zenyatta from other game. So i think it's no biggie (maybe).
[Edited]
I've made a quick look at assets, can not find the space marine model and the zealot. But I did find the Zenyatta model.
