Hi, i'm new to modeling. My problem is that the uv wrap is wrapping on each unit individually and not as 1. It flattened out and all that correctly, but when adding the material to the selected it does it to each and makes it look all screwy. Xd
You really need to post some more info before we can help you much...things like; what software you're using (3dsmax, etc.), and ideally screenshots of what exactly is your issue
isn't 3dsmax the only thing you can use for sc2? Anyways, i'm using 3dsmax... I'll post a screen shot but it's not like it's obvious what's going on.
The 3 hexagons are the top middle piece, the top piece, and the bottom of the top piece. The 4 squares are the wrapping of the cylinder piece.
Added a uvw map if that's what you're refering to by diffuse map. Tiles are set to 1. (always have been) After adding the uvw map my texture turned completely black. Nvm I see what your refering to by diffuse map and it's all at 1 as well.
Oh, is that the one from CGtuts+?
Anyway, your unwrap (in)efficiency made me sad. Don't use auto unwrap.
First of all: Uncheck "normalize map", and unwrap the tank thing as a cilynder, and the top part you can just use quick planar mapping, and then relax it.
Rest is just quick planar mapping and stitching.
Once done, figure out which parts need higher resolutons and scale accordingly, then fit everything into the 1x1 square.
Yeah more or less. Skipped around in the tutorial since it's god long (also knew most of the stuff to make this and that from my highschool class, but still watched like 1 hour + of the videos). I'm a complete noob to most of what 3dsmax has to offer despite my high school class going through a few tutorials... mind being more specific? <3 Where is the normalize map thing so I can uncheck it? I don't see it under uvw unwrap if we're referring to that. Found cylindrical under uvw unwrap and that quick planar mapping, thought the planar mapping wont let me click on it. I most likely wont be able to respond again until tomorrow.
If you enable Face selection(press 3), and look in the Unwrap UVW dialog, there is a Normalize Mapping(or something like that) checkbox.
Unchecking it will cause your UV clusters to keep their scale, but will make them huge(so you need to scale them down later on).
Anyway, watch the tutorial. It covers unwrapping.
He didn't cover any of that? Watch 2:30, he goes straight to his uvw unwrap and hits edit. He never flattens it out either which is a puzzle to me. Found the normalize map box, it was a bit hidden. Kay, so did this: Deleted my old uvw unwrap. Selected only the cylinder. Added a uvw unwrap. Unchcked normalize map box. Clicked Quick Planar Map. Clicked Cylinderical. Clicked Edit. So, this should work for the cylinder part? What's this all about stitching? (If it's to long to explain in a sentence or two just tell me to google it, unless u want to tell me any way). thanks.
Well, making a good unwrap takes a long time, usually over 2 hours. So I can't really think of a way to explain this without making a very long post.
I did show unwrapping on ModCraft. Episode1 had the pure basics, and Episode 2, I think, had some slightly more complex stuff.
Perhaps you should check it out. You can find the ModCraft thread, with all the recordings here.
Well his unwrap is quite bad yea, but based on photoshop texture and his UVW, top part of his model still looks different that it should.
BTW there are some really good tools for Unwraping like Unwrella, Ultimate Unwrapper 3D, XRayunwrapper... But arent free.
Still did you guyz figured out what his problem was ? It might be caused by unwrapping the model, then moving verticles what would cause streeching.
But yea, If you want I can help you UVW over skype video stream.
BTW Otixa, what is the name of command in "hotkeys setup" of Unfold Mapping and Flatten Mapping, I want ti bind that to a hotkey, had to reinstall max and I forgot to backup my hotkeys... stupid me :) . Cant find it maybe you know.
I use sometimes on some parts, but unfold is quite useful. And I dont know how to set hotkey for it again, also cant find stitch again... there are 2 commands but seems like neither of them work.
BTW, Skitty, post you upgrades here, I will track this thread.
Sorry it took a bit to reply again. (I'm in the US). Any who, http://cg.tutsplus.com/tutorials/autodesk-3ds-max/uv-unwrapping-a-hard-surface-object-in-3ds-max/ is a tutorial all about stitching. Also tigerija it tells you where to go to change hotkeys so you can check that place and also find the current hotkeys. Otixa, is that planar and cylindrical (and I guess square or w/e for the square pieces) really necessary to do? He didn't do it in his tutorial, he just did the stitching and resizing. Also, I never moved any thing around after unwrap and stuff. Edit: Kay tested this out and it seems to be working for me. Though I'm still curious about needing to use planar and cylinder and stuff like that. And If I need to be doing all this individually then how do I put it all into one square box thingy to use. Edit2: There was a stretched place in the middle... I selected it and it had the texture over the entire thing... I moved it to be a bit smaller and it made the image below which is a improvement but not all that great, any help on this? Xd

First of all, post your screen, print screen. Hide any private info from the screen.
Then we will try to help, ok ?

Looks like you need to add UVW Map modifier, and configure it for this to properly work.
I am reinstalling max so I can be 100% specific here... Nothing to do :( .
Anyway, go into MAPS, select this diffuse map. You should TILE somewhere , or something. It might be set to 48. Set it to 1.
Can you find it ?

You can send me scene if you want so I can take a look what is causing the problem.
Maybe try to use another texture, some kind of patternchecker texture ? And check you UVW map also.

No idea, sorry.
I just use the default modelling hotkeys. Never used unfold/flatten mapping because the results make me sad. :P

Hm, use cylinder and hit "fit" button xD, hen it shouldnt be stretching.
You can also unfold that part.
BTW that hotkey just isnt working for me since I reinstalled max Oo.
Nvm, fixed...
@tigerija: Go
That worked, thanks. So I should always do this after stitching right? Also in sc2 this texture would have it's rendered appearance right?
When you stitch make sure that you set Bias to 0 to prevent stretching.
BTW, if anyone knows... is there any possible way to dig a hole into a mesh ? Like round hole on some random spot on the mesh ?
