OM*G, I got 3ds Max 2010 working! This time kudos to: MS Windows :O! Windows 7 Event Viewer pinpointed error location. It was file called mscorwks.dll which was actually missing from my Windows\System32 folder. Additionally .NET framework 4 (beta) was required to install.
Not to mention how happy I am currently, no words! It gives much needed push to right direction with our goal. Still loads of work waits ahead.
So anyway, I've been working on identifying additional structures and fields for NiNtoxicated's 010 Hex Editor template. Additionally, I added the particle info he already had in his 3DS Max importer script into said template. And I'm posting this here in case someone else looks for this sort of thing any time soon.
Additions: identified most of the noteworthy LITE (lights), PHRB (physics body), and PHSH (physics shape) fields, added the SDCC and COL (color) structs, implemented PAR_ and PARC (particles) from the importer script, put in structs for the PATU, TRGD, and PROJ blocks, and identified and implemented the FOR_ (local forces) block.
Have come across or dealt with any of the addition Flags that can be added to the properties of Bones? Ive been attempting to change the value of the Billboard flag, with no success. the Default is False. with True, it allows the bone direction to be aligned to be facing the Camera. this flag is used in the "targets" in the campaign and part of the archon energy ball. Ive been referring to http://code.google.com/p/libm3/wiki/BONE and NiNtoxicated's maxscript.
an example of one of the targets is "BriefingUnitSelectRed" under models with campaign dependences.
EDIT: 5mins after i posted I found the value in 010 Hex.... /facepalm... lol. thanks for posting the template tho!
From my side this project is currently on hold, there have been rumors with HoS they ship full model editor and that is why I don't hurry with this so much. I'm all into it though real life dictates current events: getting job, mastering job tasks blah blah blah :D If things get stable I return.
Also Blender kinda fast evolves, APIs getting out so fast, I'm no pro, just a guy who likes Blizzard Activision games, 3d modeling in general and tinkering with it all.

Is this dead? How's the latest progress going into making an import/export plugin for blender or for the X3D file format?
