If anybody could help me with basics of modeling that would be very much appreciated. I have the trial version of Photoshop CS5, (I don't know if that is what I need) but I've heard of blender, (Would that be better?) I know it sounds like a $hit ton of questions but... wait hey don't blame me!
I believe I can create a couple of assets that may even become useful, well to some people. So just leave a comment to burn me for not knowing this crap or actually commit your very very precious time and help me out. Many thanks friends.
I haven't personally ever used Blender, but from the models I've seen come from it, it seems perfectly capable of making good quality models. Of course you'll need a lot of experience with the program to make anything of good quality, though. Also, I'm not sure if there's currently any plug-ins for Blender > Starcraft 2.
I now use blender after testing out 3dsmax. While 3dsmax is more powerful is easier to use, you cant beat the price of blender :)
Blender is still powerful and can do most of the things other 3d modelling software can do, just take a few basic tutorials to learn the hotkeys as the layout is not very friendly. Blender also includes an in program painting tool so you can texture your model although its much better to unwrap it and take it over to photoshop / gimp.
Max isn't easy to use. Probably easier compared to the old Blender UI. But there are programs which are even easier to use, and learn, such as Lightwave 3D, which I use. It has great tools like polygon down-sampling and uv un-wraping, to prepare a model for texturing. You can also get great deals on v9.0 of the program.
ok so can anybody gimmi a pointer in how to upload models from Starcraft, so i can mess with them a bit?
Sorry but there is no way to import/export models from Blender yet. Though I am learning blender myself so if you start a thread for it I'll contribute :)

Alright sweet I can start. Although is it still possible to create low poly and high poly models using Photoshop and Blender3d?
Photoshop will only be used for skinning (texturing) a model, and has no relevance to the polycount of a model.

Ahh I see, so I can use blender3d for the poly aspect, right? Would it not look as good as others?
