I'm looking to make an ability similar to the Bloodsplosion ability from Borderlands. Put simply, all overkill damage to a target is dealt in an area of effect around them.
You can detect if the unit takes fatal damage using a damage response on a buff but not how much. Also the Damage type effect is not very flexible when it comes to amount dealt.
As you want the amount of overkill damage to be dealt it would be easier using triggers. Otherwise you are going to need a ton of validators and damage effects.

How exactly would I find the overkill damage?
Probably best to use triggers and compare the target current life to the damage dealt.

Do you mean it can't be done by data, or that it is just much easier using triggers? I really don't like using triggers where a data solution exists.
