Hello all,
I have been doing alot of updates with my map, unfortunately much to my dismay on some playthroughs I find it crashes whenever units begin to attack, from what I can tell.. it doesn't matter what kind of unit, but the more that are attacking, the greater the odds of it crashing, if just 1 is attacking it might not crash at all. I deleted all of the triggers connected to attacking to test if it was to do with triggers, but the problem persists.
I know its not my custom weapons or effects as I can load a back up from a couple days prior and everything works fine. I didn alot in the two days since though so I really hope to get to the bottom of this.
The crash happens in game and produces a fatal error with a message that access was denied to a memory block. Likely something is telling the game to check a null data field.. but I can't put a finger on what the hell is going on.
Any ideas? Is my best bet to scrap the work I have done and try to reproduce ALL of it in my backed up version? :(
Very few, and only with a select number of units. Units without actors listening for effect events are still causing the crashes. Even the simplist of units with a basic melee attack are making the crash. Whats odd is all of these things worked fine before, I don't recall adding anything major to effect all of the units aside from triggering. Most data changes were tweaks here and there rather than additions.
just make sure to check actor messages , especially on damage effects, i have experienced crashes from it also but after i got rid of the actor messages having an event as a damage effect it stopped the crashing
(btw only experienced this from sending actor messages from within the trigger editor, not data editor)
I used the data editor pretty heavily for most things, I like to reserve triggers for what isn't doable with data editor. This is just so odd that this started happening, almost out of the blue. The majority of my damage effects are straight shot actor animation and apply damage effect. Some with have a set and/or search effects too.
Are the actor messages your refering to also in the default settings of damage effects? I may have left them as they are if they are default settings.
i got the crash when i was trying to force an animation that wasnt supported in the data editor
Stetmans "OLD_Spell animation name to be specific. I sent an actor message threw triggers to play that on stetman off a damage effect cause i was trying to make a melee weapon for him and everytime he would attack the game crashed.
Honestly though i have no idea whats wrong with your map..just sheding some light on what made mine crash (cause you mentioned it only happens when units attack)
i dont think its corruption though, just something is off somewhere, if it was corrupt the map wouldnt be readable.

are you sending any actor messages for any damage effects ?

Thats what I was thinking, but if its not triggers.. I really didn't change much with the data editor.. hmm
