Remember those neat concrete splats under towers in Warcraft 3, that let you see precisely how big a tower was at all times? I want to make something like that, and I think splats is probably the way to do it. So I am trying to figure out how to make a custom splat.
What I would like to know is if there is a way to texture a model differently. I like the size and shape of the "splat_missileturret.m3" (a shadow), but I want to texture it with a regular terrain texture (like Small Bricks). Does anyone have any good ideas about going about this? I am kinda newb at the Data Editor still.
Btw, semi unrelated, I have seen some splats now get placed over some doodads, like rocks and others. Has anyone checked what properties are involved in those?
I think all of this is going into a wrong direction. I just want to have a visual indication on the grid used by the unit. Can't I do something besides using splats? How do I find a model that is shaped perfectly quadratic?
I made it so that a quad actor is created when the unit of choice is born (via events).
For Actor Type "Quad", Parent "GuideVisualQuadSplatDown (Deprecated)" it actually worked while the actor was referencing to an Actor Type "Splat", Parent "GuideVisualQuadSplatModel (Deprecated)" as launch, center and impact actors, which again referenced to UI type models. The result I got was that an animated plane appeared below the unit.
Then, I tried to change the model to the dirtywater plane, which I hope has a perfect quadratic shape. But when I switched the model file, the actor didn't work ingame anymore (splat failed to load).
This solution comes close to what I want to achieve, but it isn't there yet. I lack experience with actors in general, so I'm really clueless about what to do to fix this.
No, it should remain flat on the ground as shown in the image. A simple quadratic texture below the unit. It's not supposed to move nor to show an animation.
But it hasn't got the right model yet. When I change the m3, the actor won't show (error msg attached). From one of your answers in a different thread, I know this has something to do with events, but I didn't change anything with the events. I simply switched the m3 for the model.
ZergAOECursorModel looks good. However, a retexturing needs to fill the entire plane, idk if this is possible.
Retexturing (Texture by ID) didn't work for me when I tried it with a splat model, because there was no diffuse or normal layer, only an alpha mask, which apparently can't be retextured. I have to look into that.

Thanks!
Bump (after 6 years). Would like an answer on that too.
Use a Model actor that uses a splat model and texture swap it.

Thanks! I have created a model actor and added a splat m3. However, in events I cannot find any way to swap textures upon creation.
Model swap is available though.
Read the tutorial on texture swapping in my signature.

Go play Antioch Chronicles Remastered!
Also, coming soon, Antioch Episode 3: Thoughts in Chaos!
Dont like mapster's ugly white? Try Mapster's Classic Skin!
Example cases in both groups would be a nice starting point.

Splats seemingly only have an alpha mask (instead of normal, diffuse, ...). Do I have to swap this? I want the texture to be solid at the end.

You mean a Quad type actor, the sort that has been around since HOTS?

This.
So, is it suitable for purpose or not?

What I mean is that I want to get something like displayed on the screenshot (this is not the result I got).
Unfortunately, I haven't come across quad type actors before, so I don't know if they're suitable to get there.
They are the block shaped actor equivalent to the Arc actor used by many of the HOTS abilities of Kerrigan.

So you want your splat to hover a distance over the ground?

Then just pause all animations on actor creation.
Also would the ZergAoeCursor model retextured with the right texture not suffice as a Model actor?
