So I have big ideas but little knowledge... and perhaps little of the right tools I bet I need. The question is. If I want to make my own models, what programs should I be looking for to have on my computer so I can start messing with things? I enjoy the Editor more than I enjoy the game itself, and I'm very keen to start using it to its full. Also... Just a few quick questions to clarify.
Models = what the unit looks like on the map? yes or no
Is it possible to make a model completely from scratch and apply it to the editor? (even as difficult is this task would be)
Is it possible to edit pre existing models and add additional customisations i.e weapons, hair, clothing.
Thanks for helping!
And hey! Feel free to let me know what got you into modelling or working with animations in 3d. I would love to hear your stories and the things that inspire you!
@Sock04: Go Yes, yes and... yes! You can use free programs such as Blender, and for the textures Gimp.
I'm just like you, I spend more time in the editor (or modelling, texturing) than playing. I started modelling maybe less than a year ago, I was full of ideas but back then we didn't have modellers taking requests, at least not crazy requests. So I decided to give it a try. At first I could only do some basic changes to existing models. If you check the assets section you will find my list of models and the first one was the Dropship, made from the Medivac, or was it the Ion Cannon? I'm not sure. But both were made by deleting parts of SC2 models.
Now I try to make all the crazy ideas I have, not all of them are going to be useful but they are fun to make anyway. Don't be afraid to try, its not that hard.
Cool! That's great. I'm gona download these programs and start! I believe every moment I'm using the editor I'm getting better and learning more! Cheers
And I have seen your work, that's what prompted my questions. Stoked it was you that answered them. Haha
@Sock04: Go Ohh and you're going to need PrintIn's addon for Blender if you want to import/export the models. You can find it here. This thread has a very nice tutorials on Blender, you should read it as a first exercise ;-)
Blender... what a horrible idea. Even with the more features it has such as supporting SC2 physics, I'd go Milkshape 3D any time, at least for the meshes and texturing.
Why not use 3D Studio Max 2011? Then you can use the official art tools. Or if you can't get access to them yet, at least you will be ready when they are publicly released. It's what blizzard used to create the game. Why learn a different tool if you aren't familiar with any of them?
As IggNight and Xtremedesyr said: the student version of 3dsMax is free and will let you use the official Blizzard export tool (Only works with Max 2011).
Registration asks you for the name of a university, but doesn't require any sort of verification that you really attend said school.
Yeah! I really recommend going into 3Ds Max 2011 it's a great program and for what I heard it's also the standard at blizzard (or at least the one blizzard developed the upcoming art tools, as Iggnight said before)
I have recently started digging in these forums and playing with the editor too. You know, you will learn lots of things around here, there is a nice wiki and tutorials section. And you will be amazed with SoulFincher, Zolden, Leruster, Ghostnova and many many other's work.

How does Milkshape handles UVunwrapping?

You could always download the student version of 3Ds Max, I don't think anybody cares if you're really a student as long as you're not a company.
