This team is working on a Planetside RTS mod. Hoping to bring Planetside to a whole new playing field, instead of commanding a single soldier, you now control an entire outfit.
For videos detailing the progress of the mod, go here Up to date as of 10 oct 2010
The main attempt of this mod is to recreate the feel of the large scale battles that existed in planetside. This is largely dependent on the 3 Empires fighting each other, and so will focus on 3 teams, instead of an even number of teams.
The main goal of the maps, will be to capture all bases on the map, and essentially "Lock out" the opposing empires. This isn't as simple as it looks however, as the bases all work on a "lattice" system, where by they are connected to each other through a series of links. To capture a base, you must have a link to it.

Toretzu Mar 11, 2011 at 05:31 UTC - 0 likesHi there, just skimmed through your youtube vids. I too am a big fan of Planetside *and* Starcraft, and been thinking about integrating some of the planetside gameplay into a SC2 mod.
Just wanted to give you some feedback on your mod. You've obviously put a lot of time faithfully translating the PS units into SC2. I think there are two big problems with this though:
1. New players will be faced with a huge learning curve understanding the advantages, disadvantages, and differences between all the units. If you want this to work, I suggest that you incrementally reveal units as they play the game or some sort of progression scheme. Another idea is to create a VR training map, where players get to progress through the tech tree on their own before playing maps competitively.
2. One of the balancing factors in PS was that each side was limited by the number of active players on the map. I suppose Supply in SC2 has a similar effect, but I'm not convinced that it translates so easily.
For example, in SC2, the driver of a vehicle isn't relevant, while in PS, the use of a vehicle removes one player from the pool of available infantry. Similarly, for the more powerful vehicles, additional players might be removed from the pool of infantry players to man guns, turrets, etc....
While I'm not entirely sure you are concerned with that, it does cause some concern about the the balance of units. For example, in SC2, players will use infantry units a lot in the early to mid game, and eventually stop producing them as the bigger and badder units become available.
In PS, the balance was different because everyone is basically infantry until they can find a vehicle spawn in their base that they're certified to use. Finally, infantry are ultimately a highly important unit as only they can infiltrate bases and take them over, while vehicles play a less dominant role, once a base's outer defenses have been compromised. In SC2, infantry units can't go inside bases, so they'll just get dominated by vehicles.
I hope you see what I'm getting at, and I'm not just trying to be super-critical about your work. Just pointing out gameplay differences between FPS and RTS games that may not translate so well, so you'll need to think about these things and think about what will keep the game fun and interesting without making certain classes of units useless.

Wolf1322 Nov 27, 2010 at 12:14 UTC - 0 likesIt is possible, and yes it's still being worked on. Unfortunately I have been sidelined for a bit, so things kinda screeched to a halt. Somethings are obviously gonna be slightly different, but i aim to keep as much as possible faithful to the source. With an obvious RTS spin :D
