EmperorSid Sep 11, 2010 at 16:17 UTC - 0 likesHello, I was one of the ones who worked on the original Heroes and Empires map in Warcraft III, though it was the later versions of it. Also, was in Final's guild Gods of Eternal Darkness(GoED) as a Shaman in Warcraft III. Though, I don't have any skills in the SC II editor yet, I was skilled in Level Design and making units in Warcraft III editor. I would be happy to help out and be a Level Designer, Quality Assurance, and make sure everything is up to spec. Feel free to let me know how I can help out.

Canterous Aug 10, 2010 at 19:43 UTC - 0 likesAlso, try to make lots of varied terrain if possible, like mountainous regions where on one side is a desert and the other is a grassland or something. Maybe add oceans or large inland seas and wide rivers. I always thought that there was just too much green in the WC3 map and too few mountain regions or ice regions. And make those different terrains obviously have pros and cons to starting your empire there.

Razherrt Aug 10, 2010 at 19:17 UTC - 0 likesAnother note on starting locations for empires, for the areas that do have a large expanse of buildable land, make those areas very difficult to defend and ones that are smaller and more irregularly shaped have more choke points and ramps.
Thats basically what I have there at the moment. Obviously its in a preliminary design phase. But there are going to be small areas, and large areas to create a more competitive environment. So if two kingdoms want to be in the jungle, well they either have to ally together, or duke it out for their land.
If you notice the bottom right lava area, very large spaces to build in, but again, very tough to defend, there are large open entrances to that area.

Canterous Aug 10, 2010 at 08:55 UTC - 0 likeshmm, the terrain... Well, there was nothing i particularly loved about the terrain, it was well, terrain. But there were too few large open spaces for empires to build in. All of the experienced players would take those few good spots leaving the newer ones to the smaller and more oddly shaped build areas. But while this would make the game slightly easier, it would make it more accesable for newer players. There also cant be too many choke points to make it impossible to attack an opposing empire. While i dont remember a lot of annoying choke points/ramps in WC3, i just wanted to make it clear that i think a LARGE number of ramps and choke points would lead to impenetrable fortresses. I would suggest rampant use of rocks and other destroyable objects that could change the defensive strategies as the game goes on. Or maybe as the players tech level increases, they are able to break apart the desotryable object to et access to a special resource or something.
