I'm not sure how the Marketplace will work, but I'd prefer an in-game purchase sort of thing. For instance, if you have an RPG, you can play the first section for free and if you like the game, pay for subsequent sections. Or pay to level up sort of thing. Or even pay for special items.

For my map (which is almost finished), I have a Rank/Achievement system. I'd love for them to be able to pay $20 for a custom rank or $1 to level up 1 rank or something like that. The game itself would be fully playable for free but people could pay to skip some stuff if they wanted.

Only thing with this is that banks need to save to Blizzard's servers rather than stored locally. Otherwise such purchases would be on a per-computer basis.

But I will never pay for a custom map that I haven't tried out first and I wouldn't expect others to do that either.

The funny thing is that people want to release premium maps equal to a quality of a standalone game. Problem is that since the map is dependent on the game, if said customer wants to try this map, he has to buy SC2 and then buy the map.

If you are capable of releasing premium maps, you are already capable of creating indie games of unique of basic to intermediate levels.

Being able to create "premium" quality basically means:

    1) You can either program like a pro.

    2) You can landscape and create unique and popular maps for SC2.

Donation is only workable if the subject is worth it to the community. Like say someone made a awesome indie game for free, but obviously need donation for servers... If said dev keeps improving said game, the community will develop a unique relationship with the dev, making it easier to pick up and know of each others' intentions and goals. If said awesome indie game attracted tens of thousands of people, chances are some will be happy enough to invest a bit of money to the dev.

Now looking at SC2 mapping, I really really doubt anyone would donate since maps are dependent on the ownership of the game SC2. People who bought the game isn't likely gonna pay for more maps. It'll make the PC game feel like a console game, where you buy a game at full price THEN pay for expansions. It's the same feeling.

the problem i see is that maos maybe cant be tested... just famous maps are known before they are played and players hsould have the possibility to test the maps....

Hum~ anime webside, Manga webside, and many web ( i just dont wan to list those out :D) they all ask for donation and keep on running.

However, here got more rich player and will to pay :D ( i am poor )

Just let's me ask this clear ~

->What do you kind of map is going to be coming out ? ->CouLD the customer SHARE those map out, which he PAY for it ? ->If OTHERS which do not PAY, does that mean they unable to play the map ? ->Is That possible that, after the PAY system com out, you guys START to FORCES on MAKEING SOLO MAP ? ( So the customer will not play with each other, so those who dont pay wont get the map from starcraft 2 battle.net )

    • There are no fun when some people PAY, but could not SHARE THE JOY with others~
    • Let me give an example,

Left 4 Dead ( 1 or 2 ) do player pay for MAPs ? Answer NO Left 4 Dead ( 1 or 2 ) do player always play custom map ? Answer rare

    1. so what i am try to point is the map even is FREE but, people lazy to download also and play ( left 4 dead )
    2. there are to many maps in Starcraft 2, always somthing NEW every day.

( SORRY for my bad habbit BrainStorming )

Thing is, People wont donate. You have to force them somehow. When was the last time you donated to anything?, erm..yeah..:p :P

Remember you bought the game, Not any "custom" maps that others could put 10000 hours into. You are not automatically entitled to that in anyway. If mappers want to charge for high quality maps, I think they should
