[Contest] Epic Battle Scene

    #1 Aug 30, 2010 at 18:19 UTC - 0 likes

If you can remember, we have had a cinematic contest before. However it was generic and this time I want to focus on making epic battle fights.

    What to do?

You are about to make a battle fight. It can be made by any known method of creating cinematic (unit manipulation, cinematic cutscene ...). Make sure to follow these rule:

    • Your fights must be scripted, no further user input is required after the fight start (some input for the intro before battle is acceptable).
    • Total video duration must not exceed 2 minutes
    • You must not import any outside video sources into the map.
    • Custom spells, custom weapons, custom units are allowed as long as they're all using the game's assets.
    • Custom UI can be used to support camera technique (grain effect, camera overlay, blood stain, etc..) and is allowed to import external sources
    • You can submit as many entries as wanted as long as they are all differents. Just make sure it is EPIC :)

    What you have to give

    • You have to provide a youtube video. If you can't record, post the map and ask, someone will help you recording it :)
    • If you want to have a music background, you can import and play it in the map, but it is recommended to add it in the video.
    • You have to attach the map used to take the video

    Deadlines

You have 10 days to complete this contest.

    • End of the submissions: Friday, September 10th - Midnight PDT (Los Angeles) [Saturday, September 11th - 9 AM GMT (Paris)]Tuesday, September 14th - Midnight PDT (Los Angeles) [Wednesday, September 15th - 9 AM GMT (Paris)]
    • A public vote will be held after the end of the submissions to decide who wins.

    Reward

The main goal of the contest is to further community development within GalaxyEdit. The rewards can be see as follows:

    • First: 1-year Curse Premium
    • Second: 6-month Curse Premium
    • Third: 3-month Curse Premium
    • Everyone else: 1-month Curse Premium

Here are some helpful stuff for the contest

An example of what can be considered epic battle

Another example. Though not entirely scripted (can be easily change), you get the idea

If you are dealing with random variable or any other random factor in the fight, don't forget to use this function

    http://wiki.sc2mapster.com/galaxy/triggers/turn-fixed-random-seed-on-off/

    Quote:

Enables or disables fixed random seed. When fixed random seed is enabled, the pattern of random numbers generated will be consistent every time the map runs. This action is primarily used to ensure that cinematic sequences involving units that have abilities with lots of randomness play out the same way each time.

I was working on my first (first ever) movie but realised when done that it was way to long, so I put in some goofy text and music so you can have some inspiration :P Anyways back to the drawing board to make a REAL epic fight under two minuts :D

here for the scrapped epic fight:

This looks like a fun contest but I'm still working on my custom map for the Blizzard one.

Victiln made such great scenes that ill see if I can do something too....too bad i really dont know anything about cameras or cinematics, so not sure if I can get anything decent done....

    #20 Sep 02, 2010 at 17:19 UTC - 0 likes

I'm going for something amusing. We'll see how it goes, but I think it should indeed be rather epic.

    #21 Sep 03, 2010 at 02:43 UTC - 0 likes

I think 2 min is too short. At least 3 or possibly 4. Someone should post a tut for those that might want to learn how to make some great cinematics. Are we allowed to use normal maps for the map terrain? I can't make terrain to save my life since I have no idea what I want.

Yea, don't assume you need to have a whole mess of zerglings taking out 500 firebats.

    Here are some ideas:

    • There are tons of skyboxes that look like outer space, why not have a space battle? Everyone goes crazy for FPS stuff, make a dog fight you can turn the camera anyway you want. Lets see some Barrel-Rolls, loop-de-loops, and even rolling scissors.
    • The Rory Swann model(Listed as Dutch) has a few good melee animations, why not have a 1v1 with a dark-templar or something? Make them fly through the air shoot beams from their eyes.
    • Tell the story of like a 1v1 melee conflict from the ports of a bunker or the SCVs walling the choke?
    • Have two civillians hiding the sewers of a planet the zerg have taken over and tell a story through flashbacks like they are recalling the loss of their loved ones?

There is a lot you can do with this. Hopefully someone will have a spark of genius and we get some really awesome entries.

I had accually been trying a space movie for some time ago, and I do agree it could be some cool battles you would be able to make. The only thing that sucks about it, is that the camera bound will always appear as a black line everytime you look into the horizon. I tried hiding terrain cells and expanding bounds etc, but nothing worked :( so if one were to make a dogfight it would constantly show what appear to be 50% of the screen showing a graphic error :P

HOWEVER, I am still a newbie with the editor, if you accually have a fix to this problem, please do not hesitate to share xD
