Normally I wouldn't ask such a noobie question like this, for I've grown self-sufficient in terraining terms, but the situation has come to a point where I have to make this one particular question, that may affect the workflow of my project entirely or at least a part of it.
I say this because this has everything to do with a map that I'm making: A Xel'Naga space station, with all those elements seen in the Maw of the Void mission in Wings of Liberty. My problem is not making the station by itself, the problem is exactly it's core component: It's style.
How's it made? How do you define it as truly alien, and not something blatanty stripped off a Terran or Protoss station? Is it curved or geometric? How to do it?
I say this because I've done an attempt at a Xel'Naga station, and it turned out to be as awful as it could get. In my standards at least.
Will be most appreciated if someone could help me at this one single doubt.
The Light will blind you. Step away from it!!!
Well, the reason it's hard to imagine how Xel'Naga architecture really looked is because their race is supposed to be the most advanced one in the galaxy. They would be far ahead of us in terms of science, engineering and shape efficiency in space and since we don't possess the knowledge they do it's hard to make any good points on the subject.
I will say this though: what we HAVE seen from the Xel'Naga seems very focused on triangles intertwined with smooth edges. The Xel'Naga temple from Brood Wars and all the cliff doodads we have now are of a triangular shape with smooth round-ish edges. There isn't a cube or rectangular shape to be found. Their colour of choice also seems to be predominantly black. Based on this, my suggestion would be to model your space station after a stealth bomber, basically. Intertwine triangular shapes with smooth round edges and keep everything black and as dark as possible, with a small spread of dark yellow lights as a detail.
Try and make a basic lay-out: if it feels off, it's probably wrong. If it feels counterintuitive and 'weird', you're on the right track.
I spent a few minutes typing up a long version of "I've never really thought about it before, will have to do some thinking in the editor", but Mozared beat me to the punch with something actually useful, so I'll just leave it that for the moment.
Also xel naga stuff is very old so is damaged or wearing out in some places.
