    Weekly Terraining Exercise #113

    Hello again people!

With the WTE having been a tad quiet lately, this is my attempt at picking it back up. Let's see if there's still enough people to keep it active until HOTS hits. After having observed a lot of people having some issues with Zerg based terrains, I figured that this week I could go for something simple: a "Zerg base". I want you to create a Zerg base located on any planet of your choosing. The main idea is a lot of creep and writhing buildings.

I'm hoping people make a couple of common errors here so we can go over them, but show me your best! :)

    ZZZZZZZZEERRRUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUSSSS!!!!!!!

Sorry I didn't have more time to do this I would have liked a lot more doodads and elevation as well as a lava creek kinda thing :( In fact this wasn't even supposed to have Zerg on it so I kinda splattered them over the terrain. I also cheated with custom models. Haters gunna hate :)

It looks nice, but yeah, it could definitely use some going over with the height brush. The flatness in the middle of the base just gives the expression of "another melee map". It'd be cool if the creep broke up with the lava a bit more to give it a more intricate feel.

I might try this if I find the time.

    • Crimson Moon: Single-player campaign - 100% complete, playable now!
    • Amber Sun: New single-player campaign - demo available now!

I like that overall. Some remarks though:

Like Dragoneles said, it would be better if the creep broke with the lava and the whole terrain mixed a little bit more. Also, in the first two pictures... I love the 'ambush' position on the Zerg units between all the shrubs, I just don't like how the creep interacts with the plants there. Does it overgrow them when taking in-game screenshots? If not, you may have to use creep blockers there to leave the plants a bit more free. That, or replace them with dead plants.

Most of this isn't actually a zerg base yet, but it's only a matter of time.

I love your approach. The whole thing seems a bit stale in its concept but beautiful regardless - it would work great as a melee map or such. Is this the finalized version, of are we going to see a fully infested version pop up?

This has actually given me an idea for another WTE type. Hmmm...

    @Mozared: Go

That's probably as infested as it will ever get.

I hate trying to make large-scale zerg structures/creep fields look interesting, so I limited it to small growths for the sake of style.

Edit: I take it back. You convinced me to give it a try.

I'll mess with the height tool and creep painter and see what happens. I'll check in game as well for the creep but I might have to downsize cliff creep and try that.

Good terrain there. The plant doodads look nice but you need to fix the random scale blizzard put in, by making them smaller and adding more of them.

Structures and battleships being smaller than their real scale is already a "break from reality", having too many of them just makes the landscape a clusterfuck.

Of course this kinda applies to half or more of the doodads that blizzard made and not just plants.

I hope you don't find this too cluttered. You'd be surprised how the Zerg manage to fit in so tight spaces...

Unfortunately I cant do this WTE, as I'm currently working on a project for the Blizzard BWTE. However, these are some nice maps here! I'm particularly fond of Telthalion's abandoned-infested style. Keep up the good work, guys!

    I do terrain stuff.

    That's all I can do!
