Many hands...

    #1 Oct 03, 2010 at 01:22 UTC - 0 likes

    Greetings folks!

I was just thinking about various things (like people tend to do) and came up with an idea. I've got a little experiment I want to give a try, which would be a joint-terraining exercise. What does this mean, you ask? Well...

    • First, I terrain the start of a map. For this 'exercise', I've decided to go with the Mar Sara tileset, because it's A) partly my favourite and B) the tileset that most people seem to be acquainted with.
    • Then the next person to join the thread makes a post saying "I'm working on it". He downloads my map, and spends anywhere between ten and thirty minutes terraining in it. He saves it, edits his post, and uploads it there.
    • Another person pops up, who does the same. We continue this either until the world implodes, or we're tired of it. Let's see what our combined power can come up with!

There's just five rules I'm going to put in for now, to keep everything going in the right direction:

    1. You do not talk about the joint-terraining exercise.
    2. You do NOT talk about the joint-terraining exercise.
    3. You do not change or edit the tileset, for now. It could royally screw over the entire map, so I just want to make that stick for the moment.
    4. You do not obviously edit terrain already in place. If you need to lower a bit of cliff to place down your valley, that's cool, but be reasonable - don't completely remove another persons work.
    5. If two people make posts at roughly the same time, the first person to make his post is the one who's version we'll continue editing. If you were too late with responding, tough luck for now, wait until the person above you uploads his edited version and try again.

This exercise, like the WTE, is for people of all skill levels. Don't worry if you're a complete newbie, throw us what you've got. On similar note, to the veterans: feel free to improve terrain already in place if you feel you can. Just, again - be reasonable. The terrain I've cooked up to start with is very basic, and only insinuates a couple of possibilities in different areas of the map.

For now, that's all. I'd just like to see how interested people are in a project like this and how it works out.

An additional rule I implemented later to keep things flowing:
The 'queue' is a rather precarious thing Nardival. The thing is, if everybody just 'queues' up, odds are that one person in the queue is going to be gone when it's his turn. At that point everybody past him will sit and wait for him to do his thing even though he's not there. Because of this, try and do it like this - you cannot "queue up" through normal means - you will have to wait for someone to post his rendition of the map, and then get the post in before someone else does.

    So no more:
    A - I wanna work on it
B - Me too, I'll take it when A gets back
    C - Me too, I'll take it after B
    A - I'm done
    (2 hours later)
C - B, are you still doing it?

    And instead:
    A - I wanna work on it
    B - Me too!
    A - I'm finished!
    C - I'll take it now
B - I got skipped QQ I'll have to be quicker next time!

Good luck and have fun guys!

Interesting. I'm not too interested in doing this, but i am interested in the outcome.

We should do some 'Mapster map' where everybody adds a small bit to a map to turn it into something, whether it be terrain, triggers, coding or data editing.

I agree with wolf here. I'd like to contribute to this. I'd say I'm a trigger and data guy.

Well, I'd be more of the terrain guy, I <3 terrain, altho I know my fair share of triggers and data.

BTW, map is attached down, whoever wants, take it.

Edit: Fogot to say I find this is a great idea.

Damn EuYaz, I'm already liking this - you did some things I totally hadn't anticipated in my own view for the map. Right now I'm quite curious what the next person is going to do with the fence - I had a Terran base in my mind, but I wouldn't be surprised if someone ended up doing something completely different with it.

@Wolflisk & OneSoga: for now, I'm keeping this a terraining project, though I reckon there's no reason this couldn't become a full-blown map at some point. It might be an idea to, once we finish the terrain, pass this on to the data and trigger editors for them to do their thing, and we'd end up with a map that half of sc2mapster has worked on. It will probably be pretty crisp if we can get a story behind it and maybe turn it into an interesting RPG or such.

Anyway, I'm passing my 'post' on for now - I don't have much time to work on it at the moment. The next person who wants can feel free to chime in, I'll do so myself again at a later moment.

Make sure to send a PM when the terrain is done :) I want in on this. Suck at terraining :/
Also, could people upload a screenshot of the terrain as well after theyre done? I really wanna see how it looks like without forcing my computer to its knees by loading up the editor now...

Hey Thnks Mozared, i'll try and update it today too, I'm gonna check how the map has evolved in a few hours.

Will keep an eye on this, but won't participate. I've got too many things going on myself to waste time just for the purpose of practice, I got enough practice from ModCraft ;D

    #18 Oct 03, 2010 at 15:07 UTC - 0 likes

I'm doing some work on it atm.

Edit: Alright, I've got it finished. I didn't really add anything visible, but fixed the pathing for all existing areas. I made pretty much everything accessible so it's more or less playable right now. The only thing I haven't looked at yet is the bridge and the facility in the upper right corner (someone will need to take some time to improve this).

Additionally, could people who finish work on the terrain mention briefly what they've changed in their post, assuming it's not obvious?

Nice work all, keep it going!

@TheAlmaity: don't worry - if we get around to it I'll probably just post up a post similar to this in the trigger/data forums. Not sure how I'm going to do it yet, but it'll be obvious to everyone.

Right click and save target as. I've got the same problem, I take it you're using Firefox? For some reason it attempts to open .SC2Map files in your browser which leads to... yeah.
